JOHANNESBURG - You are now even less safe in your home, your business is more likely to be robbed and you are more likely to have your car hijacked or child killed — but still the police say overall crime in the country is down.

Compared to the same period (between April 1 2007 and March 31) last year, robberies at businesses rose by 47,4%, truck hijackings by 39,6%, house robberies escalated by 13,5%, while car hijackings increased by 4,4% according to crime statistics released by Safety and Security Minister Charles Nqakula in Pretoria yesterday.

Assistant police commissioner Chris de Kock said the higher number of business robberies also included robberies at spaza shops and hair salons.

Social contact crimes such as murder, attempted murder, rape, assault and indecent assault showed a decline, but the number of children murdered hiked by 22,4%.

The number of those falling victim to attempted murder increased by 13,7%.

De Kock also noted a rising trend in the attack on ATMs. Only 12 incidents were reported in 2005, but 2006 saw 54 incidents. In 2007, 386 ATM bombings were reported. This year to date, 538 were attacked.

He said the attacks were initially carried out by small groups of two to three people when it started but that they had grown to heavily armed gangs of between 10 and 14.

Nqakula said though they had noticed a decline in crime levels in the past five years, the government was concerned with the levels which continued to be unacceptably high. He also expressed concern about criminals who had bought silence from residents who either co-operate out of fear or because they gained from the criminal activities.

Farkin hell. If that trend continues then won't be any ATMs left in like 3 years.:eek:

Would be an interesting study that, comparing the rising inflation vs crime in developing countries.

I would hesitate to guess that this is not just an SA problem.
 
Our local Spar petitioned to have the ATM outside their store removed.
Yesterday, FNB came to collect it. Reason? The tenants of the shopping complex were concerned over the safety of their customers and staff.

So much for the "crime is down, feel good!" bullsh1t we are fed.

HOUSE robberies, South Africa’s most feared crime, increased 30,5% in KZN since last year.
The 3 480 in KZN from April 1, 2007 to March 31, 2008 was second to Gauteng’s appalling 7 314, but house robberies decreased by 5,4% in that province.

KZN businesses were also hard hit — 1 923 were robbed in 2007/2008 compared to 997 in the previous period, an alarming 92,9% increase.

Burglaries at homes were down 6,5%, but burglaries at businesses increased 7,6%.

Banks continue to be the target of robberies in KZN — 22 were robbed this year compared to 11 last year, an increase of 100%.

While the banking sector was a prime target in KZN, cash-in-transit heists showed a slight decline and were down 16,5% — 101 compared to 121 last year.

There is also no end in sight for car owners as they continued to be victims of hijacking — 3 889 cars were hijacked this year compared to 3 563 last year, an increase of 9,1%.

However, 13,4% fewer murders reported at KwaZulu-Natal police stations: 4 713 this year compared to 5 009 last year.

The Witness could not obtain statistics at area and police station levels as is normally the case, because Nqakula did not release them yesterday. That means the public will be unable to ascertain criminal trends in their areas.

The reason given was that, as a result of changes to provincial borders, some police precincts were also allocated to different provinces.

So we've had around 250 000 murders since '94. In reality the number is most likely around 400 000 IMO.

Those ATM bombings are over the top, put the fkn paint bombs into atms and cash in transit vans you idiots. Peoples lives are at stake, I don't CARE if its not cost effective for you Mr I-Get-Paid-To-Give-Thugs-Information..

Total deaths for the U.K and U.S were between 400 000 and 500 000 each IIRC

Of course the U.S had a population 3 times bigger and the U.K twice as big at the time as well
 
I am amazed at Nqakula.

He says govt is concerned with the figures. Was it not a year or two ago he told us to eff off and leave the country if we whine about crime?
 
And with the Chinese Shipment of Arms, it's only ever going to get worse. Its actually sick how they place a guy for security at the ATM with just a pistol. Never mind the unmanned ones.
