Nice update to the Canon EOS - not enough to make me want to ditch my 400D but still decent enough.

Pity it's only going to be available in April. I want to get my DSLR before my next trip to S.A. (end of Feb). So I guess I still have to decide between the 400D and 40D.

On the Pentax side I really hope these announcements make the price on the K10D drop significantly - still need to buy the old man his new cam...

IMHO get the 400D and spend some money on decent glass.

I can squeeze a 40D+kit and a EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM which I think is enough good glass to start with.

I like the 40D for the build quality and weather/dust sealing. What can I say, I'm pretty clumsy. And the size - the 40D is much bigger. I forever struggle with small cameras. I looked at the Nikon D40 - nice camera, and from the reviews I read it's pretty much at the top of the 6MP pile. I could get it for £300 in kit form, but I just can't hold it comfortably.

Still a tough descision because the other major differences (1/8000 shutter and 3200 ISO) don't really concern me and I'm guessing they make up a substantial part of the price difference.

Those look like nice bodies. Personally I wont get excited until full frame becomes a bit more reasonable. I am wanting to build a nice lens collection for that change.

That's why I'm going for the EF lense right from the start. I'm guessing full frame will eventually become more commonplace. And if it doesn't - no big deal :)

You wont go wrong with that approach. i see that more and more bodies are coming with focus sensors that operate at f2.8 or larger aperture. Most of those lenses are full frame lenses in any event. So it makes sense to get a lower end body and higher end lenses until you can buy a pro body(big bucks) at some stage.

By the way I am so with you on the 400D size issue. I just cant hold one comfortably. Its too small, and my hand just cant get a comfortable hold on that body.

I dont have small hands either and I thought size it might be an issue (especially with a larger lens on the body) so I got the grip. While I dont find myself needing it as often as I thought I would the extra controls and battery power do come in handy.

Cant say I have tried one with a grip on. Might be an answer.

When I get my other 400D back from being repaired I'm planning on leaving it on one body full time.

450D 9 point AF :drewl:

That is is very nice step up.

No local pricing yet??

I prefer the spot so the 9/11 point AF focus is not too high up on my list. The built in shake reduction/IS is though. So I'm leaning more to the Pentax. (this is not an invitation for a Pentax vs Canon debate - I just prefer the Pentax. My opinion)

Ok - how about the IS vs faster glass debate? :D IS is for girls and old men which shaky hands :P

I've had one for a while, makes the camera somewhat heaver, but it handles much better. Don't forget the 2nd battery that the grip takes.
The 2x Canon battery option is also considerably lighter than the 6xAA option.

I'm more interested in the "to IS or not to IS" debate. I'm really uneasy about stuff shifting around in the lens - it's a delicate enough pice of hardware. The Pentax system seems a better approach to me (not to mention cheaper and backwards compatible).
