New DStv channels, numbers changed (1 October 2012)

bloody hell. it will be harder to cancel now. value proposition is better me thinks. need to sort out extra view for the wife then its nag for cancelling.

What bugs me is now I have to delete and re-add all my series recordings. Looks like I have to sit with a pen and pad this evening...

Was watching the Ryder Cup on 171 when the switch happened on my decoder. The screen went black as if you were changing a channel and when the picture came back, it was on 211. I am not sure how that would have affected anyone who was recording on a specific channel when the switch happened.

Are we forced to record eveything in HD now?
I always recorded series and sport in SD to save space on the HDD.

Yup, you are forced to record things in HD now, if the channel is simulcast.

What grates me though is I want a nature channel in HD... I want to watch the BBC nature stuff in HD...

Dude, have you ever seen a little channel called Mzansi Magic? Go on your knees and thank whomever you pray to that there is not more of that crap on the telly. Also, have you heard of Egoli, The Wild or any of the things on Kyknet? Do you want them to do more of that, but in movie format? Really? I quite appreciate overseas shows, since I am paying the premium price already, thanks.

I'm not saying they should produce it [also, Mzansi Magic movies = Nigerian more than South Africa, but very entertaining if you've hit the bong...]

I'm saying they should let local production companies produce content. Lets expand our local market. You may have noticed, but we do actually produce quite a few movies worth while.

Bloody hell, some of you record a lot! The only thing I tend to record is Dora the Explorer for m daughter :D

Everything else I either watch live or don't watch it at all

This is silly. I am going to get an epileptic fit sifting through these channels.

If they want so much to make navigation sensible and easy then why the following?

- Discovery Channel (121), ZoneReality (132), Crime & Investigation (170), Discovery ID (171), National Geographic (181), other reality/documentary channels (182,183,184,186,187) - so, you have reality/documentary channels from 121 to 187. Why not just put them together.
- While all the movie channels are between 103 and 112, the Turner Classic Movies channel is on channel 137
- While the family entertainment channels (SABC 1,2,3 and eTV) are in the 130s. What is Soweto TV doing at 251 - not that I watch it. But WHY?

Surfing this morning made me a little bit dizzy.

Hmmm, who cares what the channel numbers are..? I just press one of the arrow keys on the remote (or i to bring up info) and then scroll to the channel I want by channel name. It's quick (using i is not always so quick unless you have favorites defined), easy to use and you never have to care what the channel numbers are ever, because you KNOW for sure the channel numbers will change again the future. So save your self the hassles.

How about DSTV start investing in local film production companies? How about having more short-film competitions? Have DSTV commissioned local only shows? Soapies? Wildlife shows? Game shows? No, they add no value

They buy shows from overseas, slap on 300% operating margins, and hold us ransom for sport.

Everyone bitches without actually knowing what they are talking about. When I lived in Ireland I would have had to pay close to R900 a month if I wanted Entertainment + Sports + Movies + HD - that is excluding extraview and various specialist channels we get for free here.

Ill be honest when I say this: DSTv has better shows than Sky [supposedly one of the best providers], too. I watch a much more varied palette of TV since I moved back.

Call me stupid, but I am very happy about this. Extra HD channels, more movie channels, etc. I am not in front of my TV 24/7, so I will not be seeing all the repeats. I am getting really fed up with seeing all the repeats on this forum with bitter, moaning people bitching about the aforementioned repeats.

THERE WILL BE REPEATS, LEARN TO WORK YOUR PVR OR WATCH SOMETHING ELSE.

The end.

Totally agree! ALL satellite/cable providers anywhere in the world will have lots of repeats and it's for obvious reasons - say +- 100 channels x 24 hours per day x 30 days per month = 72000 hours of NEW content that has to be produced somewhere in the world every single month and bought by DSTV to keep all the repeats-mouners happy. That is about 32 000 new movies that has to be made every month. Or 72 000 new hour long series episodes, or 144 000 new sitcoms... EVERY MONTH. As you can see, that much content does not exist and can never be produced every month, and neither will we be able to afford it if dstv had to buy that much content...

Why are people moaning about repeats all the time. Are there some old unreleased blockbuster movies that never made it to dstv?

I almost never watch live tv anyway - 90% of the stuff I watch are pvr'd. And there are no repeats on there :D

Well for starters, I care what the channel numbers are.

And secondly, DStv themselves do otherwise they would not be shaffling them around.

Third, I am quite sure there are other people who do too.

The point I am making is that it is not sensible the way they have placed some of their channels.

I have a sneaky suspicion that some (the ones I have pointed out) are 'inappropriately placed' because of commercial reasons rather than user friendliness.

Iv heard that people stream their online sports in HD, any have any idea which sites offer that? What's the cost?

R700 for DSTV is such a waste.

I have used Pay TV in a few countries. DStv is one of the best, especially if you enjoy sport.
I'm not to bothered about there being more repeats with the new movie channels, it's like Ster Kinekor having 2 screens vs 8.
You need to spend a serious amount of time in front of the TV to see repeats.
