New DSTV HD Decoder

i said if its anything like the dady, then the sd is better.
if not then yay

It's much more responsive than the big PVR, better performance, quick response. I don't know about recording but when rewinding live TV there is a small lag unfortunately.

I recommend splitter set up so TV guide and updates work! I will test simultaneous HDMI and AV soon, hopefully this evening.

Yip that's what I'll do. Thanks for all the info you've been sharing, I find it very useful.
Since I have a HTPC, I understand the usefulness of not having PVR. I mean, why pay a subscription when I can do it free of charge on my HTPC and share the content via my home network to my media center extenders?

Does your HTPC record HD? Can your HTPC record a different channel while you are watching something else, I assume only if you have dual view or xtra view, and for this you have to pay the PVR fee anyway?

I agree that for many people PVR and/or xtraview is great, my point was only that, for me, it's not worth R65 a month.
I can still pause/rewind/record TV (not HD, but it's possible with the right gear) and watch recorded content and live TV at the same time. My HTPC allows me to share ALL my media to my other rooms, not only TV.

I agree that the R65 per month is ridiculous to allow you to use the PVR... I wonder if any other broadcasters do this? Maybe in the UK?

Not as far as I know. Plus they are much cheaper overseas and you get shows and movies which are less than 2 years old

Anyone know when and if a UEC baby decoder will come out?

Anyone know when and if a UEC baby decoder will come out?

the MC rep on the DSTV forum said if it does come out - it will only be end of this year or next year.

I have bought the splitter when I got the decoder, but have not used it yet. I'll try this today....but I'll first see if the decoder updates when I remove the xtraview cable...

I report back on:
1. Does baby Pace upgrade without heartbeat cable
2. Does baby Pace upgrade with splitter (this has been answered by BobJones)

Ok, I've tried this and it does not work...

I used a splitter to split one lnb. Even though the 'upgrade' goes through, it kicks out after about 2 minutes with an error message. I also loose all the HD channels and the channels on the 'horizontal' feed have poor signal quality...

without the splitter, I have all channels including HD channels, EPG (not full, but what I"m used to from the SD decoders), no record ability and no update ability...

I'm going to take in to MC for the software upgrade...

Can someone post here - what is the software version on the BABY out the box, and what software version is received via the download?

Out of box is 1.226, not sure about update

Well, thanks in large part to the comments in this thread, I went ahead and bought myself a baby HD decoder today, and I am very happy. As I've said before, I'm coming from the SD PVR and a concern of mine was the speed of the menus etc, as I'd heard that the HD PVRs have been notoriously cr4p in that respect. Fortunately, I cannot complain at all in that department. The baby decoder is as fast as the SD, if not faster.

And of course, I'm blown away by the picture quality, very happy on the whole.

I can also confirm, firmware version 1.226. No updates as yet.

I noticed one issue, every 5th time or so I switch on the decoder it reboots. Anyone else experiencing something similar?

Why not try it a couple of times first? During the upgrade the decoder looks like it is unresponsive, but is actually chewing through data in the background. Do the tuners show one VER and one HOR?

Mine shows firmware 1.236 at the moment, it must have updated. I've had it for a week.

also on 1.236 after upgrade

I have picked up a bug, buy not sure if it existed on the BIG HD-PVR's. If you are watching a channel on the BABY and you press right or left arrow key on the remote, you get the grid of channels. Now you can scroll to any other channel and press the INFO button to read more about the programs on that channel. Once you have read the info, you press exit once to go back to the grid.

Now here is the bug - when you press exit to get back to the grid, the highlighted square on the grid moves back to the channel showing. What this means is, if you are watching channel 403, and you moved to 104 on the grid to read about the movies showing, when you exit it takes you back to 403's square. This is highly irritating as you then have to scroll across all the columns to get back to 105 if that is the next channel you want to see what is showing at the moment.

My SD-PVR does not do this. Can anyone check if the BIG-PVR's do it as well or if this is a BABY-PVR bug? It's minor, but irritating as hell!

No, mine just showed VER on tuner 1....tuner 2 was blank....

as I've mentioned, it picks up that there is a firmware upgrade, but when it starts with the upgrade, it bombs out after a couple of minutes with and error message and subsequently reboots...
