Okay, Eskom punished us for their mistakes and they now get to charge us a lot more for hekelectricity.

I want to compare the rates that I pay as a member of the Ekurhuleni municipality with other municipalities. I also am a wee bit curious as to how it actually ends up on the bill (which I have yet to receive).

I am a residential user, so I am in Tarrif A of their tables:
Ekurhuleni Municipality
- 100kWh free.
- R 0.6150 / kWh above 100kWh (61.5c per kWh, used to be 36,5c per kWh - an incredible increase)

Source: http://www.ekurhuleni.com/content/view/452/212/ (there's a link called Electricity Tariffs - 1 July 2008 256.58 Kb)

What's your municipalitee / complex charging you?

that is a massive increase? sheesh... in Durban we're only being punished with a 30% increase... you'rs is nearly 70%...How exactly are they justifying that?

Just bought electricity on prepaid this evening.
R0.66 per kWh, ZERO free.

I bought last month and paid 32.21 c/unit and this month it's 47.38 c/unit - 47% increase.

supply and demand

think back on Enron. (USA)

Cause a power supply shortage (accidental or purposely) like throw in a screw at the nuclear reactor, or dont try very hard to notify the public of the foreseeable shortage of power, and force blackouts all over the country.

Before you know it, you have the country at your feet, and you can dictate just about any price you want.

Brilliant business tactics I say! :p

Well done Eskom, you win. Just like Telkom has.

Also take note that from July they adopt winter rates.
So do a check to see what last years winter rates were.

P.S. I bought R3000-00 worth of pre-paid electricity before winter rates :D

I checked a bill from August 2008, June 2009 and August 2009 that my complex sent me and here is my results.

August 2008 - 608 "Units" of Electricity cost R333.95
June 2009 - 689 "Units" of Electricity cost R389.58
August 2009 - 682 "Units" of Electricity cost R633.52
Same time last year -

Therefore
August 2008 1 "unit" cost R0.55
June 2009 1 "unit" cost R0.56 and
August 2009 it is now costing R0.92

Mine is also nearly 70% more

Mine costing R0.95 per unit for the 1st 300units
there after R0.68 per unit...:(

I bought R3,500 before it went up - still using the first R1,500 - no clue when I'll need to load the R2,000, for some reason the R1,500 is lasting a lot longer than it used to.

Mine hasn't changed in the last year, around R0-57 per unit unless I'm calculating it incorrectly (excluding water)...

So when you buy again you will first have to pay the say X months *R90.00 "fsucking useless Service Fee" before you get any units. Be prepared.

I won't be living there anymore....

Even if I was - I still saved on electricity over this period, and the service charge is something I would of had to pay anyways.

Some munics have step tariffs setup as well. Electricity is an odd business, the more you buy the more you pay.
