Ford's new European-focused, European-designed and European-built EV SUV. Shares a platform with VW./

New Ford Explorer spearheads firm's US-inspired electric reboot

Most crucial Ford in decades is an electric SUV using a VW platform and a US ethos

Ford’s new era has begun: the Explorer is a European-focused, European-designed and European-built electric SUV channelling the Blue Oval’s American spirit and conceived to do battle in one of the market’s fiercest emerging segments.

Due to start rolling down the production line at Ford’s revamped Cologne factory (where it currently builds the Ford Fiesta) from mid-2023, the squat new crossover measures 4460mm long. This pitches it roughly between the highly competitive small and midsized SUV markets and means it will compete with everything from the Jeep Avenger and Mini Aceman to the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Skoda Enyaq iV.

In this respect and many others, it is the most important new Ford product in decades and will be crucial in paving the way for a totally overhauled – and downsized – range of passenger EVs designed around the concept of ‘American-ness’, far removed from the likes of the Fiesta, Focus and Mondeo that have gone before.

The company’s Europe boss and head of its Model E EV arm, Martin Sander, told Autocar: “If we concentrate a little bit more on the real DNA of this company, really going back to our roots as an American icon, we are the only American, iconic car company still doing business in Europe. I think this is a huge opportunity for us to reposition the brand, and to create a new world of experiences around this DNA.”

The Explorer is the first Ford EV – of two so far confirmed – to use Volkswagen’s MEB electric vehicle platform as part of a partnership in which the US firm reciprocates by building VW-badged commercial vehicles in Turkey and South Africa. Choosing dimensions that put it halfway between the VW ID 3 and ID 4 was a conscious decision to avoid directly competing with those two cars, bosses told Autocar, but it was not a condition of Ford using the platform.

Nice, but will it come here costing more than a Range Rover Sport lol.

Ford Explorer [EU]

Ford revealed the new all-electric Explorer - a bold new electric vehicle that combines German engineering with striking American style.

Explorer is the first in a wave of innovative new electric vehicles from Ford and forges the way for a complete reinvention of the Ford brand in Europe. The mid-size crossover has seats for five across two rows and is fully equipped to set families on the road to adventure.

Engineered and built in Germany, the all-electric Ford Explorer offers an outstanding digital experience, helping drivers and passengers stay connected and comfortable on the move. Features include a SYNC Move supersized movable touchscreen and fully connected infotainment system with audio tailored to the interior, wireless app integration and advanced driver assistance technology.

Adventure-ready design and storage of about 470 litres in five-seat mode make Ford's newest electric vehicle ideal for exploring the city and beyond. The 17-litre console between driver and front-seat passenger can hold a 15-inch laptop, combined with a private locker and available hands-free accessible boot space, Ford's all-electric Explorer sets a new standard.

Futuristic exterior styling is matched by an ultra-modern interior with premium materials and features such as sculpted sporty seats and a sophisticated soundbar more typical of revolutionary concept cars than family vehicles. All this comes together with the ability to fast charge from 10 to 80 per cent in just 25 minutes and access, by 2024, to 500,000 charging points across Europe.

Is the new Ford Explorer more than a VW ID.4 in American disguise?

Ford wants its cars to have a more adventurous, American reputation. Goodbye Focus, hello Explorer…

If you’re American, then you know all about Ford. Ford is a pick-up truck and SUV-making phenomenon that also sells the Mustang.

If you’re European, you also know all about Ford. Ford sells bazillions of sensible small hatchbacks like the Fiesta and Focus, plus a smattering of those new-fangled crossover things. Oh, and the Transit van. It sells the van that basically moves Britain.

Well, scratch that. Ford wants you – needs you – to rethink what that Blue Oval badge means, in Europe at least.

Despite building class-leading family cars that are keenly priced and drive brilliantly, Ford’s European profit/loss chart has bounced up and down like a nervous meerkat over recent years. And with customers all too ready to chop in their common Ford for something wearing a posh German badge or a more adventurous Korean contender, there’s a new plan afoot.

That plan is to build fewer cars, sell them at bigger profits, and to double down on what Ford thinks sets it apart. Chiefly, being American. So future Fords will look more land-of-the-free, and they’ll be themed more around adventurous outdoorsiness than school run buses.

Which brings us to an all-new Ford family hatchback: the Explorer. It’s a medium-sized all electric crossover with five seats, a big square boot, and a chunky-but-friendly look about it. It’ll go on sale later this year with prices starting at less than £40,000, which slots it neatly between the current hybrid Kuga and the all-electric Mustang Mach-E.

The Explorer won’t be sold in America. Not this one. America will get its own Explorer, which is bigger. This is very much a car for Europe. In fact, it’s fully European under the body. German, in fact. Because the Explorer uses exactly the same ‘MEB’ platform that carries the Volkswagen Group’s electric ambitions.

That means the Explorer shares batteries, motors and general underpinnings with the likes of the Volkswagen ID.3, Cupra Born, Audi Q4 e-tron, ID. Buzz, Skoda Enyaq… and other cars too forgettable to mention.

Ford Is Building an All-Electric Explorer But Not For America

Ford’s all-new, all-electric Explorer will be available for order in Europe later this year, but Ford has no plans to bring it here.

Ford, like every legacy automaker, is scrambling to electrify its portfolio before strict emissions regulations and internal combustion engine bans make selling gas-powered cars almost impossible. So far, it’s electrified the Mustang and the F-150 pickup truck, and now it’s preparing to launch a battery-powered Explorer.

The new Explorer has been developed by Ford and German automaker Volkswagen. The two companies announced a partnership to build EVs together in 2019, which they said would see Ford use VW’s platforms to develop more EVs for the European market.

That’s exactly what’s happening with this new Explorer. It has been built on Volkswagen’s MEB electric vehicle platform, which is the same platform used in the ID.4 electric crossover. But you wouldn’t really know that from the outside.

Instead of the ID.4’s distinctly VW lines, the new Explorer has a futuristic, boxy style to it. Its roofline and C pillar are familiar from the 2023 Explorer we see over here, but updated to fit the EV’s much smaller dimensions. It’s actually almost 21 inches shorter than the current Explorer.

Despite its smaller size, the new EV Explorer has seats for five across two rows and storage space spread across the car of “about 470 liters,” which is roughly 125 gallons here in America. Inside, Ford says there will also be an “ultra-modern” interior that packs in sport seats and a soundbar audio system.

Inside, there’s also a touchscreen that makes up the center console, as well as an enormous storage bin that can fit a 15-inch laptop with ease. The Explorer also comes with standard features like keyless entry, heated steering wheel, dual-zone climate control, and a hands-free tailgate.

All-new and all-electric Ford Explorer unveiled

Ford has finally unveiled its first - of two - VW MEB-based electric SUV designed for Europe. While the technical details are still being kept away, the all-new and all-electric Ford Explorer is a really interesting vehicle. For starters, it shows Volkswagen what it should have made instead of the VW ID.4.

Ford is feeling a bit liberal with the Explorer name even though it claims this is a full revival of the brand. The truth is, all generations of Ford Explorers were around 5 meters long, many featured 7-seat options and the Explorers are a backbone of the US Police vehicle fleet. This new European Explorer is half a meter shorter and it has no chance to offer a seven-seat layout.

It clearly is a much smaller vehicle, made to fit much narrower European roads and much tighter parking spaces. Once we look past that, we actually see a promising electric SUV from Ford, with the battery and powertrain from VW. This should be a good combo, right?

The design is spot on, big wheels make the car look aggressive, chunky and purposeful-looking body suggests it can take on the occasional trip off the beaten track. And yet, with its floating roof and slim headlights, it looks sporty and almost sophisticated. It looks like the F-150 Lightning had a baby with the Range Rover Sport and it is one good-looking kid.

Ford Explorer is a Volkswagen ID.4 clone

The Ford Explorer electric vehicle is the Blue Oval’s part of the deal with Volkswagen. Here’s a first look at what’s on offer.

What you see here is the new Ford Explorer electric vehicle, but under the skin its something quite familiar. The Ford shares its underpinnings with the Volkswagen ID.4 as part of the big agreement between the two brands, which saw collaboration productions like the Ford Ranger and Volkswagen Amarok, and the Volkswagen Caddy and Ford Tourneo Connect.

This won’t be the last group project either, with Ford planning a sporty EV on this platform too, which we’ll assume will be based on the Volkswagen ID.5.

Not all details are available immediately, but the new Ford Explorer is a 5-seater electric SUV that will be built in Germany for the European market.

As far as powertrains go, there’s a 170 kW single motor paired to a 77 kWh battery that supports 170 kW charging. This model has a range of 539 km. If you’re wanting something with a bit more punch, there’s a dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup with 250 kW and a range of 491 km.

Inside, the main talking point is a huge 14.6-inch portrait infotainment system and Ford says it’ll come with comfort features like a driver’s massage seat, dual-zone climate control, keyless entry and a hands-free power tailgate.

More details about this product will be released soon. Right now, Ford is gauging reactions and perception of the design, and despite it sharing the MEB platform from the Volkswagen ID.4, we think it looks quite different to the donor vehicle.
