New ford focus RS

"New reports suggest that Ford is already working on a limited edition hot hatch that would slot in above the new all-wheel drive Focus RS.

And, naturally, it’d be called the Ford Focus RS500.

Of course, the new Focus RS is just about to land in South Africa (be sure to catch our test in the July issue of CAR magazine), but the performance arm of the automaker is apparently already considering something even wilder.

According to Australia’s Motor Magazine, insiders at Ford have confirmed that the proposed RS500 could turn out to be the fastest-accelerating hatchback in history.

That means it would have to complete the blast from zero to 100 km/h quicker than the likes of the Audi RS3 Sportback quattro (4,3 seconds) and the Mercedes-AMG A45 4Matic (4,2 seconds).

Thing is, there’s probably not much more power still to be extracted from the 2,3-litre EcoBoost four-cylinder engine (which already makes 257 kW, enough for a 4,7-second sprint to three figures), so any acceleration improvements will likely have to be realised via a radical weight reduction programme.

The publication furthermore reports that the RS500 could gain a front limited-slip differential, and perhaps even the option of a dual-clutch transmission."

The Ford Focus RS is in such demand in the UK that the car maker is looking to put an extra 1000 units on sale.

The initial allocation, believed to be around 4000 units, is already sold out but Ford is still taking orders and currently negotiating with other European markets to increase its production for the UK.

In order to offer more units to the UK, Ford must take some models away from other markets in Europe because its Germany plant is already at maximum capacity, but the manufacturer believes this will not be an issue.

Ford had, however, previously suggested that the first 4000 units would be the only ones available to the UK – as was the case with previous Focus RS models – but after unprecedented demand for an RS product, it is now rethinking its position.

Ford confirmed customers are still able to place an order for the Focus RS and that it wanted to make sure it could supply the demand from customers.

Its popularity has also resulted in an eight-month wait for deliveries of the car. Some buyers could face longer waits, however, with one Autocar reader who recently ordered a Focus RS being told by their local dealer to expect a wait of 12-14 months.

The rest of Europe will receive 4000 units – as with the Mk2 Focus RS – but Ford predicts North America to be its biggest single market, with close to 10,000 units already sold.

The UK has been the largest market for the previous Focus RS models, but Ford says it’s different for the new Mk 3 Focus RS because it’s the first time the car has been available globally. The new Mk3 has sold twice as many units as the Mk2 when compared with the same period in the UK.

Ford has enjoyed a surge in demand across its performance models in Europe, resulting in a six-month wait for the new Mustang.

From ST Owners forum:

I just ordered mine and it was 510k exactly

BUT, we are only getting the entry lvl version, NO Recaro's , normal rims etc....
So I inspected the new RS and to be honest it doesn't speak to me like the previous RS did. I was excited when I met the mk2 RS but this was more subdued. The front is nice and the intercooler is massive. I can see why they blocked a part of it off but you can just rip the plastic blocker easily. The side is uhm... Plain. Rear is not too bad but nowhere near the aggressiveness of the mk2. On the inside, the seats are fugly. Ford need to fit bucket seats in them like the mk2. Gear shift is shorter than mk2 but not by much. I don't like the speedo much. Too busy. The battery was dead so I couldn't start it. Under the hood, 76mm induction, big air box, plastic intake Iirc.

CTR...is R600k...& RS is a notch better hence my "too low" response. But let's see

Unless we are getting more than one spec, like a RS1 , RS2. The one they spotted didnt have the Recaro seats etc, maybe that is the poor mans version. But ja, let's see. My contact at Ford still has no clue about pricing, so maybe ST Owners is taking the piss.

If it's R510k then I'm ditching my plans on an M135. That will be the bargain of the century, and all our allocated units will get snapped up pretty quickly. But I honestly can't see it coming below R600k.

I received a quote for Focus RS. Can anyone guess the price? ..... R600? Nope.. R650? wrong again...

R712,000 incl vat -
