Hi folks

We are currently considering changing the forum software since we are starting to experience problems with this Snitz-Access setup. There are many software options available like PHPBB, vbulletin and invisionboard. We are currently looking at conversion options and other practicalities and your input will be greatly appreciated. Please let us know what software you prefer etc.

Regards,

RPM

vbulletin has worked pretty well on quite a few forums I've visited ... PLUS it can send you mails on new replies ...

We are Telkom - Resistance is Futile - You will be Assimilated

I gave RPM the link to the Futuremark Forum. Their forum is fast and stable. Plus it has added features like email notification within a user control panel etc.
Their forum is modded, but based on Infopop. They even have a Remote Control that can be used as a small little window to view active and current threads.

Hi RPM

i got to comment the software you are running here atm is very good, also like the look and feel.

http://www.audiclubsa.co.za/forum/forum.asp also not bad but the volume of messages is much lower.

I vote for phpBB. Used quite a few forums powered by phpBB. Might be a good idea to disable Avatars and image links though, to save on bandwidth.

Shameless plug coming up ...

phpbb is shiped with "cannonball linux" aswell ...

Hi Kaspaas

PHPBB is indeed part of nuke, but it is not always the most current version and it is not that easy to customize. I am also hosting the news section (www.mybroadband.co.za) and the forum (www.myadsl.co.za) on separate servers in order to create some redundancy. It does seem like PHP is a popular choice… I will wait for a few more comments and then start to work on the conversion… It will definitely not happen overnight since some testing will need to be done…

Whatever the final product chosen, may I suggest that it not be a proprietary one, and that it be available under any derivative of open source licensing that guarantees associated freedoms and source code access - preferably a Creative Commons Deed...

I think myadsl is worthy of a customised forum... say like http://bc.whirlpool.net.au/ bloody nice that.. there must be some php programmers here who can wax something like that.

If the front page shows the top 5 most active topics from each category and the top 5 news items at the very bottom that would be good. Let's not do something standard, myadsl should stand out.. [:)]

email notification would be good, it is the one thing I miss with the current forum.

We could just develop a custom forum 'skin' in order to make us stand out. As long as it's easy on the eyes when reading long posts.

what I really like about myAdsl/Snitz forums is its simplicity, its easy to read, and no frills, If the move to another forum model is made, please, no Avatars, or images in signature, I get too annoyed browsing forums where a one line post can take up a whole page due to extra graphics, i hope everyone else feels the same. Another extra which would be nice in particular is this quickreply bar.

My vote goes to phpBB. Open Source and very user friendly. On top of that it is completely scalable! It will not go out of development anytime soon and is esthetically pleasing to look at and makes it easy to spend time in front of. ;o)

I was about to post exactly the same thing, but you said it all dorris.

If the new forum does allow avatars, etc. please have an option to turn it all off.

Here's a nice example: http://www.egosoft.com/x2/forum/index.php

They use phpBB 2.0.10

Oh, here is a list of some of the forum software available out there...
