New forum software: give your views

As to the e-mail notifications ..... If RPM is looking at moving this server local again e-mail notifiers would be out of the question - bandwdith issues.

I'd suggest phpBB and I'm sure a few of us could provide some modification/customization as required ;-)
 
I'd be willing to provide the server and b/w (international) for email notifications ... not sure how this would work but maybe there could be some event driven mechanism on either side ...

just a thought ...

The current software has done well except for some reason it manages to make some of the messages wider than the screen, which is a real pain.

One feature I like from the TelkomSucks BB is the ability to include pictures, similar to the URL option. That would make it much easier to post cartoons, graphs, etc.

Some kind of automated link between news stories and news discussion would also be nice.

RPM, you are <b>doing a fantastic job</b> and I don't envy you having to try a changeover with a BB as active as this one. More power to you!

A system based on mySQL and PHP is without a doubt the best way to go. In testing a number of opensource solutions a year ago, I decided on FUDforum. I have been very happy with that. phpBB was not the easiest software to work with, and many things one need are available as patches which are difficult to apply. I also read about performance problems and security issues with phpBB. I think people like it for its looks, but as we know looks are deceiving. If one is prepared to pay a little for a commercial system then vBulletin is is big favourite. With FUDforum and vBulletin email notifications are built in.
 
I use phpbb and i find it very easy to use, simple to set up aswell.

No pixels were harmed in the making of this post.
 
I must agree that it is an enormous improvement over the other one. I read at the top of this thread that the previous Forum was Snitz on ASP. I'm using Snitz for one of my forums but I remember the last forum here being far more limited than the one that I'm currently using. Was it a very old version of Snitz?
