New harddrive, CPU overheating?

My specs are:

Gigabyte GA-G33M-DS2R Mobo
Intel Core Duo E8400 3ghtz (stock cooler) -LGA755
6 Gigs DDR2 RAM
Nvidia 9600GT (arctic cooling twin turbo, plug in via power cable to psu, couldn't find a place on card to plug in)
Gigabyte 585 PSU
i installed a new 1.5tb hard drive yesterday, and since then when my pc does a large load of things, it auto turns off, i've run core temp (with logging) so i could see, and im pretty sure its the cpu over heating, so i know im likely going to have to get a new better heat sink for it.

But i was just wondering if the installation of the new drive could have affected it anyhow..
And a few recommendations of heat sinks that are under R600
Also would (cause im sure i need to) replacing the thermal gel on both the gpu and cpu make much difference?

What are you CPU temps? What are the hard drive temps? Using HWMonitor you can get the temps of several components incl your hard drive. What case do you have, how many intake fans does it have and where are they placed?

Probably not, you might have accidentally broken something your unaware of whilst installing the HDD

Would be a good idea after about a year if your machines is always on

Case: gigabyte GZ-X1 (generic gigabyte case)
It has one 12cm fan at the back. There isnt really space for others...
According to core temp (dont know how accurate it is) my cpu idles at between 50-60C and got up to 130C in the log before my pc shut down.
Also my gpu idled at 30+- previously, now its suddenly 40+- according to the nvidia gadget i have. (my guess for this is its some heat transfer between the heatsink on the mobo which is just above my gpu)

pics of HWMonitor, both idle and during processes.

idle: (mostly had firefox, free download manager, and pidgin open)

Processing: -temp was increasing by 1 every three or so seconds.

Lol, could you have made those pics any smaller? :D Couldnt make out anything. Anyway, with only one exhaust fan a hard drive can make a huge difference to overall temps. Hard drives run at up to 50 degrees dumping a lot of extra heat into your case. Thats why any semi decent case will have intake fans right by the hard drives so that heat does not build up there. I'd say its time you get a better case.

edit: what temps are your hard drives reaching? Most are only rated to operate at up to 50-55 degrees. Any more than that and you are damaging them.

What do you mean small? click the image it takes you to imagehost with the image full size (after a few seconds of loading) :P

Did you not maybe unplugged the power to the fan of the cpu cooler?

Coolers to look at and that everyone would recommend, CM Hyper TX3 or CM Hyper 212+. Both are under R300.

I'm sure, all fans are spinning -believe me i checked :P-

edit: all harddrives temps are below 35 at all times as far as i saw.

No CPU fan is working according to the images (which are not clickable btw, I manually renamed the thumb part to image in the url). Again I'd say your case cant take 3 drives and all the heat they are dumping into your case. Safe max temp for your CPU is 72.4 degrees accoring to Intel specs, you are going way above that hence the problems. You could try adding an intake fan on the side of your case to blow fresh air directly onto your CPU. I do see that the specs for you case incl a 120mm intake fan, however the vents for the front intake seem minimal, so I do not think that its bringing in a lot of fresh air.

I can't believe that just one more drive could shoot up the temps that high, especially if it is a 5400rpm drive.

Didn't you maybe knock one of the heat sink's clips off and now it doesn't make perfect contact with the cpu? Maybe remove and reseat the heat sink?

BTW, the images are click-able on my side, maybe you should start using FF3, Archer. :p

So you think a new case would be better served then a new cpu heatsink?

More than likely, I would not be too happy with a drive running at anything close to 50 degrees. 40 is borderline for me.

Could try reseating the heatsinks, may make a difference, but you would've noteced if you hit the heatsink hard enough to dislodge it (if it was tightened properly). Arctic silver is a decent thermal paste to use, but temp difference between best and worst paste is like 3 degrees, so its not that big a deal. And am using FF3, also tried in IE. Dunno whats up with my machine at work. Its a crazy beast, things that work yesterday dont work today. Needs a reinstall

Okay well cant do anything today, but tomorrow i will start with the cheaper option first, checking everything applying new thermal paste and then i will compare some cases and heatsinks and probably get one or the other. Thanks for the input guys :)

Edit: reason for tomorrow i have to go into uni now :P

Sorry didn't read all the posts but it sounds like a PSU problem? apart from the temps that is....
have you checked that? what is you watts on the PSU? ok i see you use the 585...
I'd still check that though...do you have a spare lying around? how old is the PSU?

<snip>

It does, you can fit a 120mm fan in the front of the case (behind the HDD bays) as well as one 80mm on the side by the grill...

Are you by any chance overclocking?
I just think a reapply of thermal paste and a re-seating of your heat sink will fix the problem..

There is your problem. CPU is running at 83 degrees while Intel lists the max temp as 72.4 degrees. Not an obvious PSU problem I'd say :whistle:

There is the problem, running a 755 cpu on a 775 mobo. :D

Don't think he is OCing, but agree with the re-seating.

is the HDD cables maybe blocking airflow?

@sharkbait
Sorry that was a typo, if you google for it (i did to check not being home the cpu is 775.

i am not overclocking no.

@Tpex
Some of the cables are a touch messy but its nothing that should prohibite airflow.

@nakedpeanut
I also do not have the space to install extra fans in those slots, cause of the my gpu cooler and location of the older ide drive which has to be palced right at the top. That being said i dont think the reccomended cpu cooler will fit acctually...

@ drukkie
The Psu is about 3 or 4 months old, i dont offhand know its exact stats i will find out when im home again.

My thoughts:
For whats been said im tending towards getting a new case reaplying fresh thermal paste.
