I had a chance to play around with the new iPad yesterday and talked briefly about it on another thread here
I was wondering if I'd made the right choice not to buy when I had the chance, and now that I'm back in Africa, maybe not get the chance for a couple of months. I had reasoned that the screen was lovely, but with an iPad 2, it would be a lot of money to shell out for that feature alone.
But last night when I was on a flight with bad lighting and reflections everywhere, it hammered home how limited the new iPad really would be in it's current state. I was watching J. Edgar on my iPad 2 (enjoyed it btw) and the pixelation of the movie background was quite noticeable in darker shots. Now that is not going to look better on the new iPad, only a higher res movie would look better, obviously, which is a lot bigger than the 700mb copies I usually grab for speed and convenience, and of course, for our SA bandwidth problems.
And here is the problem, with at least the 16 and 32gb versions.
Pretty much everything that will be made or upgraded for the retina display will be considerably larger than at present of course. Look at some of the fps' all ready. Many are over a gb and if they go retina, the size will shoot up again. And on my 32gb iPad with a decent size music collection, a few pages of apps and 3 or 4 movies, I'm struggling already and removing apps occasionally to make space for new ones.
But really, in it's present state, the iPad 2 does a great job of looking good and balancing the storage it has with the size of apps and content. Sure we always need more storage and will never be happy, but to utilise the new iPad screen, something has to give. Whether it's storing less music, loading one blue ray rip movie at a time, cutting down on apps or even loading apps designed for iPad 2, it appears Apple have dropped a clanger with this iteration and we can only hope the capacity increases to a more reasonable level with the newer iPad/4.
So if you've got an iPad 2, don't bother with the upgrade, it's not just the money you'll struggle with. If you don't have a 2, go for the new 64gb. 32gb at a push. 16gb, no chance. I'd even sacrifice the 3g for more storage if I was in the market for a new one.
