I had a chance to play around with the new iPad yesterday and talked briefly about it on another thread here

I was wondering if I'd made the right choice not to buy when I had the chance, and now that I'm back in Africa, maybe not get the chance for a couple of months. I had reasoned that the screen was lovely, but with an iPad 2, it would be a lot of money to shell out for that feature alone.

But last night when I was on a flight with bad lighting and reflections everywhere, it hammered home how limited the new iPad really would be in it's current state. I was watching J. Edgar on my iPad 2 (enjoyed it btw) and the pixelation of the movie background was quite noticeable in darker shots. Now that is not going to look better on the new iPad, only a higher res movie would look better, obviously, which is a lot bigger than the 700mb copies I usually grab for speed and convenience, and of course, for our SA bandwidth problems.

And here is the problem, with at least the 16 and 32gb versions.

Pretty much everything that will be made or upgraded for the retina display will be considerably larger than at present of course. Look at some of the fps' all ready. Many are over a gb and if they go retina, the size will shoot up again. And on my 32gb iPad with a decent size music collection, a few pages of apps and 3 or 4 movies, I'm struggling already and removing apps occasionally to make space for new ones.

But really, in it's present state, the iPad 2 does a great job of looking good and balancing the storage it has with the size of apps and content. Sure we always need more storage and will never be happy, but to utilise the new iPad screen, something has to give. Whether it's storing less music, loading one blue ray rip movie at a time, cutting down on apps or even loading apps designed for iPad 2, it appears Apple have dropped a clanger with this iteration and we can only hope the capacity increases to a more reasonable level with the newer iPad/4.

So if you've got an iPad 2, don't bother with the upgrade, it's not just the money you'll struggle with. If you don't have a 2, go for the new 64gb. 32gb at a push. 16gb, no chance. I'd even sacrifice the 3g for more storage if I was in the market for a new one.

+1

128/256 GB should have been introduced with this generation. The lack of more storage is making me consider saving R1400 on the clearance sale and buy an iPad 2 instead. My aged eyes don't see separate pixels on its screen anyway.

Not a bad option at all. As I said, I'm pretty sure the balance is spot on between the storage and the display on the 2 and the 'HD' apps still look brilliant. I couldn't be happier with mine.

Text on the iPad 2 looks out of focus and fuzzy. I sold mine. I want the high res display because I use mine mostly for reading. If you upgraded from an iPhone 3G to an iPhone 4 then you'll understand.

For reading get a Kindle. Serious. Much better reading device in every way.

If you want to carry two devices around be my guest but I enjoy reading on the iPad - particularly at night so I'd have to disagree the kindle is a better reading device in every way.

I also enjoy being able to read the subtitles on my movies . . . :D

I understand. I have a 3g and retina iPod at home. It's night and day. I said in the other post I linked to that the pdf's looked great and also on the novels they had on the display as well. If you use it for reading then sure, it makes a big difference. It really is a lot clearer and well defined. Not that kind of grainy look on the iPad 2.

I zoomed in and out of the pdf's and at maximum size on the new one and it is as good as they say it is. The lag in rendering was as bad as it is on the iPad 2 though and as a magazine reader, that is one thing that bugs me a bit when flicking through a mag. The new one seemed to be a bit slower at rendering than mine as well, but they never had a magazine and that was on a few pdf's they had loaded with text and photographs. I guess that's why they loaded them, everyone is looking at the pdf's and the movies because otherwise, there is not a lot of difference anywhere else.

I work away a lot. The kindle saves me carting a shed load of books in my case so I'm happy to cart two devices around :)

Keep in mind the gen3 iPad should cost exactly what the iPad2 cost just last month. I emphasised should because we're subjected to Core pricing, not apple.

So you getting a retina display, twice the ram, 4G-LTE, quad core GPU, 5mp Camera with 1080p video recording, feature full iOS5.1 all for about the same price as the current iPad2. Seems like a worthwhile upgrade to me....

My iPad 2 would end up with one of my kids so I'd get nothing back on it. It'd be a straight cough up for a new one with no offset against the old one. And I just don't think it is worth it. Maybe I was paranoid and thinking of the reports of people getting fooled by with an iPad 2 last week, but I actually spent a bit of time looking at the signs in the shop to see if it really was a new one. Because other than the pdf's, there isn't really any other noticeable difference.

By the time it launches here the price will be adjusted down because of a better exchange rate. Remember it was increased by about 10% in January.

They said the same thing about the 4s vs the 4. Live with them for a couple of weeks, the differences become glaringly evident.

You're probably right. But I still reckon the storage will be an issue for full enjoyment. Don't get me wrong though , if I didn't have an iPad I'd jump on one of these new ones. But from what I've got now to what I've seen, I'll wait for the next one.

Are you getting one btw? And do you have a 1 or 2 already?

For my uses 16gb has always been plenty . . . at least on my first and second generation iPads. Given the increase in size of the updated apps to accommodate the new display I'm beginning to wonder if 16gb will be enough next time around.

I have a just under 1 year old 16gb wifi iPad 2 currently. If I can flog it for around R3k, I'll definitely replace it with a new 32gb wifi iPad.

Look, in my current space and work environment it's far from a must have but it's really a nice to have. Carting a laptop off to the lounge or to bed at night simply isn't practical. The iPad fills the gap between laptop and smartphone nicely.

Agreed, 32gb is the preferred model of choice now.

Good price. Did you sell it through gumtree or what?

Gumtree yes. Base model (16 GB + Wifi). Just watch out for the scammers, cash and collect only.

Around the iPad 3 launch there were a lot of panic sellers and the price dropped fast, but since it was announced that the iPad 2 won't be discontinued, and the panic sellers stock sold out, the price started increasing. I saw several for R3,750 (sealed in box).

Guess it really depends how much of the warranty is left.
