New iPad, upgrade from 2? Thoughts...

I love reading on my iPad 2 but it does get a bit heavy after a while. So unless they reduced the weight it's a no for me..not worth the upgrade. I'll get myself a kindle one day for reading...or something.

If you want to carry two devices around be my guest but I enjoy reading on the iPad - particularly at night so I'd have to disagree the kindle is a better reading device in every way.

I also enjoy being able to read the subtitles on my movies . . . :D

The latest Kindle is so light and thin that it can easily be carried. For someone that needs a device to read on as primary requirement the Kindle is best. The iPad is just too big, too heavy and too power hungry for someone that reads a lot (like myself). I don't want to check the battery when I'm enjoying a book and the e-ink is in my experience much softer on the eyes. At night I use a booklight. Outside the Kindle wins hands down. I'm getting the Kobo Touch e-reader next week to be able to read ePub books also. My e-readers are my most valued gadgets.

So you cant read ePub on a kindle?

Nope. Pity. Frustrating situation is that Kindle - as far as e-ink readers go - is the only one that is legally available in SA. Publishing Rights issue. Sony told me they are not allowed to sell their reader in SA for this reason. Got similar response from Kobo and B&N. A friend is therefore buying me a Kobo Touch reader in Europe whilst on a trip there.

Interesting thing to ponder re DRM e-books sitting in the cloud with Amazon is that Amazon is getting more and more to the point where the company cannot be allowed to fail and where any such risks will need US Gov intervention. So many people have so many books - huge investments - in that cloud and they cannot take those books anywhere else because of DRM.

There is an opportunity here for a Cydia dev to write something along the lines of Xslimmer on the Mac, i.e. an app that will determine what kind of device it is running on, then proceed to strip out all unneeded resources from every other installed app.

Or does that exist already? That would make me seriously consider jailbreaking.

Sounds like a task better suited for a desktop computer. apps are just zipped files and you can already explore the contents by changing the file extension to zip.

Of course I'm not sure if it would affect the drm they place on the files.

Oh, I probably read just about as much as anyone on the forum and I do it on the iPad. Main reason to choose it as a reader for ME at least was the ability to read nonstandard formats that ereaders can't cope with - such as PDF's with heavy images, CHM files and particularly Isilo format PDB which is proprietary to the Isilo app, and of course animated children's books.

I really can't remember the thread where I said the Retina display wasn't this magical - but there was a thread about the two displays. There were even screen shots showing the horrendously jagged lines of the iPad 2 that made it look like a VGA screen.

I was constantly knocked because I hadn't seen one in real life - and there were folks with an iPad 3 that compared and said it was good - but not super duper wow ... but they were knocked down for various reasons too.

Anyhow - I've just seen the iPad 3 and it's good, but not nearly as great as made out :/

I got mine at launch. As I said to you before it's about managing expectations. I have not been disappointed and the device does what it says on the box.

Some consider the retina display a minor upgrade. Considering you look at the screen as long as you using the device I would say it is a massive upgrade and it is. The screen doesn't disappoint. Text is incredibly crisp, clean and clear. The iPad 2 doesn't come close.

What I will say is the heat issues were not blown out of proportion. This thing is a lot hotter than I anticipated it would be, even with a cover on. Not uncomfortable, but a lot more noticeable than I expected.

I've never been one to play games on the iPad but I have looked at RealRacing2 HD and Rage and they are pretty awesome. I sold my iPad 2 so am unable to do a side by side comparison but from memory alone I would say it is significantly better.

Under reasonably heavy usage we getting 10 hours from a single charge, as advertised, but it seems to take ages to charge her up again. Charging overnight is now the preferred option.

Voice dictation falls short. It's about 90% accurate if one speaks like a tool and about 70% accurate if one speaks normally.

The new camera is a vast improvement over the old and actually a lot more user friendly than using the phone to take pictures. It actually makes a lot of sense checking out the subject on a 9.7" screen as opposed to a 3.5" screen.

Anyway.... A few apps have been updated for retina display and the difference is significant although comparisons are difficult for me as I'm not comparing side by side to the 2....

AVPlayerHD was one app I was eagerly anticipating and I've found the results under whelming. Didn't manage my expectations well here...

Posted using voice dictation exclusively speaking Olivia Amafli could cool. Absolutely no editing of the original post and yeah. Just talked speaking like a robot. Actually quite useless." That clock. Voice dictation simply will not work. Go all quite right to. Maybe if I clock talking to Mary Candlebluff all better. It is Robert epic fail afraid

If only it worked properly... Would be bloody epic, it's incredibly useful, typing on the pad is still awkward inspite of the split keyboard..

Agreed.

I was just knocked down when I said the screenshots were incorrect and the difference isn't huge.

When I first saw the screen in the store I was a little underwhelmed. After using the device for a few days it astonishes me how crisp and clear everything looks. Performance of the device is also much better thanks to quad core graphics and 1 gb ram. It's noticeably faster and safari doesn't reload all the time. Definitely a worthy upgrade if you are a heavy user like me. Amazing technology packaged in the most beautiful, premium tablet on the market.

Here is my 2 cents worth:

I got myself an iPad 2 16Gig Wi-Fi only last year for Christmas. It was a real treat, because I never owned one before. I do a lot of reading and after a while, my eyes start getting tired because of the resolution, something I never tired of on my iPod Touch 4 with its retina display. I even had the Kindle which I passed onto my mom, my eyes got tired quickly. And if I carry on reading, especially when its a good read, then I start getting headaches. I have sensitive eyes.

Since then I have been monitoring the news about the new iPad "3" and am now in the market for the new iPad, mostly for the retina (higher resolution) display for my eyes, but also going for a 64Gig with 3G. As a previous member mentioned, 16Gig is not enough ;) Wi-Fi only is nice, but half the day I'm on the road. Now the Android phone does provide tethering (hotspot) options, but having to juggle between the devices just to get online was for me just an inconvenience, getting the iPad with 3G will just make it a more rounder package :)

So yes, if you do a lot of reading, emails, etc. the new iPad does make a difference, if you are just using it as a multimedia device, by all means, save a few rands and get the now cheaper iPad 2, but get the big model, 16Gig is too small...

Hope you find this feedback useful.

All I can say about my iPad 64GB 4G is WOW! I still have my iPad 2 but there is no comparison between the screens. Just try Google Earth to see the difference when zooming in. This display is a hottie!!
As far as the heat is concerned, I have not noticed a significant difference between the two devices. I am in Australia ATM so maybe the fault if any has been rectified on the newer models. No shortage of stock here either. Another strange thing I found is that many dealers are slightly undercutting Apple Store prices - it's not by much but it helps to subsidise a new cover.
It all comes down to price when making the choice especially 2nd hand iPad 2's. The difference on a 64GB 3G can easily amount to R2500 plus on a sub one year old model and that is significant.
