So I was looking around for a new iPhone since my last one was not insured I would have to pay for it myself.

The 32gig is not available. Well, not an unlocked one.
So I'll take a 16gig again. Its not a train smash, I was coping just fine with my last 16 gig.

The thing is, its cheaper to take out a contract with the phone, than it is to buy it cash, or at least, counting the free airtime the same price!

New iPhone 3GS 16 Gb = +-R9000 (I know you can get them cheaper from gumtree and bob, but I'm not in the mood for Russian Roulette)

Talk 120 = R300 p/m x 24 months with a R3500 pay in = R10700

So you pay an extra R1700 for 2880 anytime minuets = 60c a minute! If you count that the average peak price per minute is R2.10 .. (comes to about R6k) Thats a saving of about R4300!

Am I missing something?

That seems like the best option.

I think you are missing are couple of important things - CLIP, itemised billing, and possibly SIM insurance. I believe some or all of these are mandatory. Also, I don't think Talk 120 has true per second billing, from the first second. So it's not as simple as saying that your call rate is 60c per minute. How many times do you hit someone's voicemail, and are billed for a full minute even though you hang up as soon as you realise it?

Also, I'd be loathe to sign a contract now, what with the upcoming interconnect rate drops, and imminent launch of Telkom Mobile.

I've cancelled my MTN contract, switched to prepaid, and now I'm waiting to see what happens. I might have 2 wait another 3 to 4 months to see any real change. Hopefully there will be some significant changes.

On a side-note, being on prepaid is definitely more expensive than signing a contract. Call rates are much higher, and you don't get a free phone. However, you are locked in for 24 months.

But since want an iPhone, you have to go to Vodacom, unless you are willing to play Russian Roullette. So maybe a contract isn't that bad.

Doesn't the contract include 250mb of data too?

No data, or sms's. but thats ok,
I have wireless at home and at work, so at most my data usage is about 130mb. It will be a whack less now, because I'm back on adsl, so I won't have to use my phone as a backup as much.

Also, my wife is using about R250 per month more on her phone in calls, so the minuets won't be wasted.

Hell at the end of the day I might even save some money!

My contract is up for renewal in the middle of next year anyway. So if Telkom brings anything to the table I will switch then.

I thought that the interconnect rate drop would be across the board, not only on new contracts? I suppose it won't make a difference on bundled minuets...

I know what the literal meaning is.. just not how it is being used in this context.

I mean it in the sense of buying something dodgy off gumtree or bid or buy, in that, there is good stuff there, but there is also really bad stuff. I really don't want to end up with a bullet. I have been burned before.

That's hectically expensive. I payed R4000.00 for my iPhone 3g after my first was stolen.

@PCsToGo: Would you have to send your iphone back to the country you bought it from if anything goes wrong? Or can you repair it locally?

Out of curiosity which website did you buy your iphone from?

The deposit for the iphone 16gig is R4100 and the monthly fee is R249, and not

http://www.vodacom.co.za/iphone_3gs/deals.jsp

Well, this is what I got via email from Vodacom direct:
