Hi Guys,

I am looking for a laptop that will be used as my primary workstation for software development.

I have a budget of around 20k in mind.

Things I want:
  • i7
  • 16GB RAM+
  • HDD + SSD (128GB+)
  • 15.6" FHD

I had a look at evetech but most of their machines are gaming laptops. How will they work as a full time PC?

Some examples:

http://www.evetech.co.za/n/1474/msi...-laptop-deal-with-128gb-ssd-and-16gb-ram.aspx

How well will these laptops handle Linux?

What other places can I get quotes from?

Thanks

I use a Gigabyte P55k as a development machine and it's amazing. I opted for a 256GB SSD, plus a normal drive, and 12GB RAM.

As for Linux I haven't got a clue unfortunately.

Thanks for the info. How is battery life?

Fujitsu N532 here.
i7, SSD+HDD, 16Gb ram
Should run whatever you want to run.

Why linux though?

Where did you buy it?

I want to dual boot linux & windows. Just a preference.

Acer S7 392.

I do my .Net, Java, Android and struggled to install Netweaver on it... Stupid install process.

Look at the Dell Latatude line.
My preference is XPS. Dell simply rocks though.
Being a dev machine, there is going to be a lot of typing, so the keyboard is as important as the rest of the specs IMO. This is where Dell really shines. Awesome awesome keyboards.

I use my HP envy 17 and very happy with it although you have to add a SSD to it.

Good to see another Envy user! These Envy laptops are amazing, also have a 17" one. i7, 8GB ram, decent'ish GFX card,
snazzy centered trackpad and powerful speakers (for a laptop at least). Popped in a 128gb SSD and this thing is smooth as butter and
a dream to work on.

Hi ADSL2

Thank you for considering Gigabyte laptops. and P55K is definitely a good pick.

Moreover , our distributor Rectron also acts as a service center , they have branches all over the country - JHB , CPT , DBN , BLM and PE , their service is excellent.

Plus we are always here to handle customer inquiry and offer technical advice , so you will not be alone when help is needed.

As to where else to seek quote from , please refer to http://www.pricecheck.co.za/search?search=P55K.

Lastly , the drivers are all ready to download from our tech support page - http://www.gigabyte.com/support-downloads/support-downloads.aspx

Look forward to having you as our customer.

Regards.

AORUS / GIGABYTE team.

I recommend Gigabyte P55k.

Their P15F is also pretty good , as it got this cool feature which allow the swap out of optical drive to 2.5" storage.
