I currently have 6 year old laptop; I5 4gb ram. The laptop is really slow and finding it such a mission to get anything done on it. Only really need it for excel, word and internet. My question is should I upgrade my current laptop with a ssd hard drive also needs new battery etc or should I just go out and buy a new laptop my budget is around R7,000 any advice is greatly appreciated!

If it'll only be used for excel, word and internet, see if you can upgrade the RAM to 8GB and definitely get a SSD.
If this is possible, I would do the upgrade rather than buy a new machine.

Not at SA prices I guess. Here's a refurb for 5.5k. Admittedly not helpful to OP...
My point was that old laptops are old beyond what the number of gigabytes RAM might indicate. All of the tech in there is outdated & upgrades will only take you so far.
For plain old office work it's plenty, another 4GB of RAM & SSD will make it feel new.
Old laptops with Core 2 Duo are still good for the job prescribed.
It is getting slow when Windows 10 is doing cryptomining or is busy during updates which are continuously crashing.
As it is circa 2012 laptop with i5, I would take it for R1500 and upgrade myself.
Reformat hard drive and start over avoiding installing manufacturers bloatware.

SSD and more RAM. Reinstall Windows removing all bloatware if applicable.

For work, I have an old Dell E6320 (i5) with 8gigs of ram and an SSD (running windows 7).
No issues with Word, Excel, PP or outlook or surfing the net either. Compared to some of the newer HPs at our facility (i7, 4/8gigs ram and a 5400rpm hard drive) this old puppy is way less frustrating to use.
So I'd go with the upgrade first before trying to find something that fits your budget.

Your ram is what makes the system way too slow....based on your requirements, at the minimum you should upgrade your ram, at least to 8gigs
Excel, word and internet and you're all crying about 4gb ram. Can run so much on that if you don't use Chrome as your browser. Assuming he didn't upgrade to Windows 10, then the 4gb ram will last you even longer.
Just do the SSD for the massive speed boost, save up for a fancy new laptop (that still uses sata interface or both m.2 + sata) and then re-use the SSD in new laptop later

Yeah lol , like an increase in ram will create any major improvement.
SSD will definitely do the trick. If you close to centurion, come visit me I'll clone your current one to a spare SSD I've got and then you can decide if you still want to waste money on a new laptop.
