I've had my 50D a few years now - stopped using it about two years back as my wife always had her POS.

Mid-year we went on a whirlwind southern Africa trip and I decided to get it out - during the trip both my kit lens and 50mm 1.8 ended up giving up, 50mm was dropped, kit lens just gave up, sounds like a rattle.

Could someone recommend a good all-round lens to get me started? I don't want to break the bank if I'm not going to get into this again.

Hi xrapidx, what sort of photography do you do? Do you want something for landscapes, portraits, sports? In other words, wide angle, normal, or telephoto? Maybe a super zoom if you want something that'll cover everything, such as an 18-200mm or even 18-300mm? Do you need a wide aperture? There are quite a few variables which will dictate which lens is best suited for you.

At the moment, something that'll cover everything... I don't usually take photo's of people - but they tend to sneak in.

Most of it is nature/landscapes/off-road vehicles.

How much are you looking to spend? Both the 17-55 f/2.8 and the 24-105 f/4 are great lenses but they're not cheap.

The Canon EF 24-105mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM Lens is a relatively new offering from Canon is is considerably more affordable.

Because I'm not sure if I'll actually use the thing again, I'd like to spend as little as possible...basically get a good enough lens to get me back into it - or decide I'm not going too.

...might go for the Canon EF-S 18-200mm

...just got reminded today as I was supposed to take matric photo's tonight... so don't think wife is talking to me.
