New lethal laser weapon will shoot down missiles

The United States government has awarded a contract to General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems (GA-EMS) and Boeing to develop a powerful laser weapon for the US military.

The Distributed Gain High Energy Laser Weapon System will deliver a 300kW-class distributed gain laser with an integrated Boeing beam director.

GA-EMS president Scott Forney said the high-power, compact laser weapon prototype will produce a lethal output "greater than anything fielded to date".

America should finally build an embassy in Taiwan and put one on the roof.

Lol.... hope this is true for the US and not merely propaganda, as I would expect it to be. Hopefully it can detect and shoot down hypersonic nuclear missiles too, because that is what China just developed and unleashed on the world.

You'd think lasers would be easier. Just saturate the sky with beams and no rocket or missile gets through without being shredded to scrap metal.
... this is stupid.

1) how do you plan to "saturate" the entire sky, and with how many lasers, and
2) how do you plan this "saturation" to handle regularly scheduled El Al flights in what is a really small country .

Some collateral damage is a part and parcel of war. I was being facetious though.

Maybe they can accidentally point it this way? After it has been properly calibrated of course.
Point a surface-to-air weapon system at us?

If it was an ICBM which can compensate for the curvature of the earth it could be launched from the US to hit a target in SA, maybe, but you do understand that laser is light and light doesn't bend, right?

Americans believe the earth is flat. I don't see what the problem is.

China might have developed and tested hypersonic missiles but they did not unleash it on the world unlike the US, that unleash their military on the world to force their version of democracy.

Wait till they make it smaller and strap it to this…

yes because China has no plan for world domination….

I read your name accidentally as Mongoloid. Haha.
Anyway, Tibet, Mongolia and Xinjiang are forcibly occupied by China. Hong Kong is a weird case as well - they don't want to be part of China and they are forcibly assimilated. And poor Taiwan, its own country that China just decided is theirs now.

Not only that, China is a country with border conflicts with every single one of its neighbours.
What do you think China is doing with their military - playing nice?
