Hi guys, hope you are all well.

My brother wants to buy the LG 42LW4500 TV. What I would like to know is what formats does the tv play when viewing files from the usb port? Is it better to buy a blu ray player with the tv or a ps3? If a blu ray player is better then which one? I would like something that can play most files currently. I know the ps3 does not play mkv but thats not too bad.

Any suggestions please?

Thanks

Doesn't the ps3 play mkv with the latest firmware?

I've just bought a Samsung BD-D5500 which appears to play all. It can also run Plex and stream everything from the PC too ...YouTube, Facebook and is 3D too. etc It's an outgoing model, so they're selling at between 1400.00 and 1600.00

The latest E range is out and only a few hundred more, but Plex isn't out for it yet- and that was the main reason for buying the player. It's a little sluggish but at the price I don't care

Can that player play games?

Of course! You can download all the latest titles from Samsung apps ;)

OP - I'd try see exactly what the PS3 can or can't do. There are pros and cons to each - the Blu Ray is sluggish, but running Plex is a bonus because you have a better GUI, pictures, synopsis etc ... And a decent price

But my brother hardly knows how to copy series and movies to a usb so telling him about plex etc might make his head explode...

The tv does handle avi, mp4, mkv from the usb port but it cant handle dts audio. This would be a problem with some hd mkv files which use dts.

With regards to blu ray, I would advise going the BD player route. From personal experience Ive noticed my HTPC giving much more depth than the ps3. Research on the web may also confirm this

For embedded player compatibility, Samsung seems to have the edge over LG.

Not really much my 46D6000 TV's embedded player won't play (dts soundtracks no problem).

I have that LG TV and a PS3 for gaming + bluray and a Mede8er for playing video files.
I would suggest that you get the LG TV + Mede8er since you haven't really expressed an interest in gaming or bluray.
