New LTE Optimizer

What I am gathering from the website is the point of the optimizer is so that you can place the router or device in the best possible spot to get the best possible signal but in my opinon for most of us this is flawed reasoning. It might have worked for 5G because of how sensitive to distance the signal is or how the equipment is designed / used to receive a signal but it doesn't work for 4G as well (unless you have an external antenna perhaps). So what if I find the best spot for the signal it wont improve my speeds if the tower is shite. Like some have said before for 4G rain this tool needs the ability to lock onto a tower. At the moment all this tool has done for me was tell me "oh hey that tower you saw there was indeed a tower...cool, heres your 0.1mbps internet for the month cheers".

Yeah none of this is very useful if the towers are all congested. You might get the best signal in the world but it means **** if that tower has no bandwidth left.

I have two towers <1.5km away but getting dial up speeds from them, instead I have to connect to a tower over 3km to get usable speeds

I checked on the Optimiser now and I am connecting to a tower 0.19km away from me which I know is a Vodacom tower as it is visible on the main road.

Did a speed test now.
Damn that’s poor

So true bud honestly I don’t understand why we struggling if we paying for internet that’s why I don’t understand why that fibre people are taking this long ... to install or construct because if we can pay 250 rand or 490 or 700 or 1000 to rain that’s unstable why not spend that money on fibre’s that will be much better ...

Bra tell me about it
Beginning of February a Vuma Reach rep came to my door to ask if I'm interested in signing up with them. 20mb uncapped fibre for R399 a month, no contract. All I had to do was sign a form so they can commence work on my property, apparently they already had the council permits and everything else sorted, they were ready to go. So of course I signed, quite a few people on my road signed. We were told they'll start work come the end of Feb but up till now we haven't heard a word from them. I cant understand what the hold up is with Vumatel, almost every person I know in my area is on Rain 4G and everyone's complaining about the poor speed but still we subscribe to Rain because there's no alternative. Bluedowns could be a potential gold mine for these fibre companies but seems none of them is willing to take the leap ☹️

Seriously now ... imagine not digging where there is gold or even diamonds ... and this is what I hate ... we want fibre we will pay for decent service so come one fibre people ... in this time the worlds going crazy at least get digging and earn that gold ...

opensignal and cellmapper can be useful mobile apps

Hi,

rather sad depressing news is that rain has now locked the debug.rain.network site!!!!!!! Asks for a username and password, which sucks ass
lol yeah, I wonder who got the link posted here in the first place, they must've caught on and didn't mean for it to face the public openly. Thankfully I got the info I needed before the re-lock but still sucks a little

debug.rain.network:443 still works. But I'm sure it's days are numbered now that I have posted here...

all lower income areas are gold mines

So what makes a debug useful?
there's some values for further debugging purposes on cellID sites but mainly can be used to know the name of the tower you're connecting to in addition to it's location on the optimiser tab. For most it's useless otherwise.

I just noticed now that when I'm on 2600MHz it shows the exact tower I'm connected to (mine connects to one that's about 3KM away), but when I'm on 1800MHz it doesn't show this. Both bands however give me sub 1Mbps speeds so Rain right now is pretty useless to me even though there's 2 towers within 1KM of my house.

But how are we gonna connect to a tower that’s closer to us ?

When I joined Rain a year ago I used to get between 10 and 20Mbps and there were only 2 towers servicing my area about 2.5km away.
According to the optimiser, I now have a dozen towers within a 3km radius and I have managed to latch onto most of these, yet the best speed I get is 0.5Mbps.
On the odd occasion I will see a 1Mbps spike but that is short lived.
Between 6pm and 11pm my speedtest still runs even though I am not subscribed to any peak package and then I get 6-8Mbps.
Nothing on my side has changed in terms of equipment. The new tower closest to me at 0.5Km gives me 0.2Mbps and it is not like I live in an area where there are many complexes.
Something is definitely up with the way this network is being managed. Never seen anything beyond 2Mbps since the lockdown began during off-peak times.

I agree I’m getting the same results even thought I’m trying everything to get decent speeds

Literally only one tower here... explains the congestion I suppose. Also, Telkom killed ADSL, no Fibre, so everyone using LTE products.

At 3am, I can get 20mbps+.... as soon as sunrises it drops off to 1-2mbps.

There should at least one other tower within a 2km radius, maybe your problem is that you are in a valley
