New M3 range

Another (fairly neutral) take on the 8gb vs 16gb conundrum.

Apple will probably sell more base M3 8GB/512GB models than any of the other skus. The idea that Macbook Pro's are for "pros" is a bit of a laugh. If you're a pro you're not going to be buying the base.

The Apple M3 Max matches the M2 Ultra in Geekbench

Apple's just-announced M3-equipped MacBooks are in the hands of reviewers and the Geekbench scores are pouring in. They revealed the potential of the M3 Max chip - it scores around 3,000 in single-core and around 21,000 in multi-core on Geekbench 6.

Those numbers put the M3 Max close to the M2 Ultra inside the Mac Pro and Mac Studio, which scores around 2,800/21,000. The M2 Ultra is a 5 nm, 60 W chip with 24 cores (16 performance, 8 efficiency), while the M3 Max is a 3 nm, 30 W chip with 16 cores (12 performance, 4 efficiency). The M2 Ultra has a 76-core GPU, while the M3 Max does with half that, although obviously graphics power isn't tested by Geekbench.

On stage, Apple said the M3 Max CPU is up to 50% faster than its predecessor, the M2 Max. These multi-core Geekbench scores come just short of that mark, but still show the M3 Max is around 40% faster.

Unreal.

R80 000 and in 5 years it will be worth R10k, if it isnt broken and then a piece of scrap.

Quite honestly, do you really need it?

Invest that R80k and in 5 years it would probably be about R150-200k in value.

Just saying.

Or the crazy fast M3 Max will allow him to make more money, pay for itself and then some.

Note the pattern
Probably boxed prior to Sonoma release. A few theories including a staggered release where the M3 would’ve dropped prior to Sonoma and then the Pro and Max now. Interesting nonetheless. The OTA updates will probably be enabled by Apple soon.

Over five years it will be fully depreciated against my company's income, essentially having cost me nothing. I'll probably sell it when M4 Super Max Ultra launches and buy the new one then, however. I don't think I'll wait five years to upgrade.
