New Mac Mini rumours emerge

I might be interested in getting a new Mac Mini. I think they can make that thing a lot smaller and a lot faster with SSD drives and i7 chips. Imagine being able to hook it onto the back of your monitor? Who would need an iMac in that case?

Waited for more than a year for the mac mini to refresh thinking ill make the switch to mac and see what the fuss (hype) is about. My new windows pc arrives today. Damn you apple.

The Mac Mini gets so little attention. i hope the new one is proper, like SSD standard. The MacBook Air is better value currently. Well depending on your adventurousness you can try hackintosh your pc if you want.

Nothing to stop you from doing that now, you'll can tie a mini to the back of a Cinema Display's stand with some cable ties quite easily (I I have a FW backup drive hanging on the back of my iMac and you honestly can't see it from the front). But you won't have the option of a 21.5" model and you will either have a teensy 500GB Hd or no CD/DVD drive. Plus, at R13 K for the Cinema Display plus 8500 to 10500 for the mini you're not saving money over the iMac, which maxes out at R22 K.

Admittedly, Apple's Cinema Displays, while gorgeous, are wildly overpriced, so if one was prepared to compromise a little there, things get more interesting.

SSD is nice, no denying. Wake me up when a terabyte of it gets affordable.

I have a feeling this Mini is going to be a growth target for Apple. I suspect something really minute but powerful. rMBP internals without the battery could mean a really small, powerful entry level computer. I can see the "get a mac" type ad for it already.

"This is your PC. You buy the tower, the screen, the operating system, the hardware and software. This is the new Mac Mini. This is your tower, operating system and software. [showing a size difference between PC vs Mini]" then goes on to say how it is better, cheaper etc like all the other ads.

It is more expensive initially, but the major benefit comes from being able to upgrade to a new mini every year or two largely paid for by selling the old one without the need to change out the screen. A good 27 inch IPS display, be it a Dell or Cinema Display, can be seen as a long term investment which will survive multiple upgrade cycles.

It's also nice to separate the screen from hardware in case something breaks.

Yup. Been down the iMac road where the screen decides to kaput itself long after the warranty is done. Ain't going back there.

The Mini I have has been a pretty solid machine, with the exception of the optical drive, which like all the optical drives in every Mac I had owned beforehand, also decided to kaput itself...

Hopefully they'll keep it about the same size with a design that makes it trivial to perform drive and memory upgrades and continues to allow for two 2.5" drives, along with a powerful GPU.

Pretty likely it'll just be a spec bump.

Not everyone realised the mini can take a second drive. It's a fairly capable machine once you upgrade the ram and add an SSD to the spare 2.5" compartment.

I have purchased a Mac Mini 2.3GHZ i7 Quad Core with Server Exition OSX and 2X1TB HDD.
Have just ordered Corsair 16GB 1600 Ram Kit (2X8GB) and a Fusion Drive.
Will remove the 1 HDD and place in a Thunderbolt External Enclosure.

I think it will perfore very well. Intel 4000 uses system memory so the graphics should be decent too...:)

I've been waiting 4 months now for the 2012 Mac Mini to show up in SA - no luck, pre orders only :-(
Did you import yours, or did you get it locally ?
Any-one know where 2012 Mac Mini is available in SA ?
Thanx

That sounds pretty nice.

Ok, so I am in for R12,000 so far on the Mac Mini and remember I already had a 23" Samsung HDMI LED Monitor.
Who's I got for the moola was the following:

Mac Mini Server edition
Intel Quad Core i7 2.3 GHZ with 4GB Ram (Upgraded to Corsair Vengeance 16 GB 1600 MHZ Memory)
Came with 2X 1TB HDD but purchased a Hybrid 750GB SSD/HDD.

So far so good. My first Mac ever. Only issue so far is the HDMI to HDMI, the text is poor?
Change to the HDMI to DVI and all good. Don't know what this means when I want to work on my Series 7 Samsung LED TV?

If anyone else has this issue please let me know.

Shouldn't be the case. I have a 2010 Mini and HDMI to HDMI on my 27" Samsung LED monitor is perfect.

Just ordered my BTO Mac mini.

2.6ghz Quad i7
256SSD
8gb RAM

Think it's going to wee on my MacBook Air. Can't wait.
