New Mac Mini rumours emerge

I have a feeling this Mini is going to be a growth target for Apple. I suspect something really minute but powerful. rMBP internals without the battery could mean a really small, powerful entry level computer. I can see the "get a mac" type ad for it already.

"This is your PC. You buy the tower, the screen, the operating system, the hardware and software. This is the new Mac Mini. This is your tower, operating system and software. [showing a size difference between PC vs Mini]" then goes on to say how it is better, cheaper etc like all the other ads.

You say that like the mac comes with all of the software you will need. The only difference between a mac and a pc is that the mac comes with the os and worse hardware for the same price.
So what software does a mac come with standard that say windows 8 doesnt have?

I always wonder why apple has never released a product that directly competes with windows desktops, the mac mini is really a glorified laptop and their only other desktop offering is outdated and overprices. Makes no sense to me. I would like to own a mac mini, its just to slow for my applications.

I take it you're familiar with windows already, so no need to explain.

Why not visit apple.com and see for yourself?

If you mean games like Crysis 12, then yeah dont get a Mac.
What apps do you think will run slowly?

Ok, so I am in for R12,000 so far on the Mac Mini and remember I already had a 23" Samsung HDMI LED Monitor.
Who's I got for the moola was the following:

Mac Mini Server edition
Intel Quad Core i7 2.3 GHZ with 4GB Ram (Upgraded to Corsair Vengeance 16 GB 1600 MHZ Memory)
Came with 2X 1TB HDD but purchased a Hybrid 750GB SSD/HDD.

So far so good. My first Mac ever. Only issue so far is the HDMI to HDMI, the text is poor?
Change to the HDMI to DVI and all good. Don't know what this means when I want to work on my Series 7 Samsung LED TV?

If anyone else has this issue please let me know.

Where did you buy your fusion drive ?

I just bought a new quad core MacMini in Orlando USA last week. The most spec I could get from it was to get the faster CPU and ask the Apple store to install a 16 GB RAM. For the fusion drive and even faster CPU, I would have had to order it direct from Apple, and I didn't have the time to wait for it as I was only there for one week......besides, they wanted an American credit card for an order direct with Apple. I really wanted the fusion drive badly.....

Currently waiting at Heathrow, London, waiting for my connection back to SA. Can't wait to try out the new MacMini and run the "Geek Bench" app on it to see how it fares compared to my iMacs and MBPro's....and my two year old MacMini

Be glad you didn't order here.

My BTO Mac Mini is taking 6 weeks to arrive ...

Psssssssst, XL1000 look here :)

Where did you buy your fusion drive ?

BTW I have done some benchmark testing of my new quad core i7 MacMini yesterday and was very chuffed at the results - compared to my 2 year old MacMini

1. 2010 MacMini 2.4 Ghz core 2 duo, 8GB Ram
@ 32 bit the benchmark index is 3155
@ 64 bit the benchmark index is 3812

2. 2013 MacMini 2.3 Ghz quad core i7, 16 GB Ram
@ 32 bit the benchmark index is 10913
@ 64 bit the benchmark index is 11844

I wont go into detail on the pages and pages of other data that was revealed in the benchmark test, suffice to say the new quad core i7 MacMini is lightning fast compared to the older core 2 duo's !!!!

I am traveling to USA in April.
I want to purchase the mac mini but will it be cheaper there? In SA I can claim the VAT back and possibly get a student discount using a family members student card.
Also what about warranty? Is it really purchasing from USA?

Bump

When I bought my iPad in Chicago it was nearly 2.5k cheaper than when it eventually came out here in S.A.

I just bought a iPad cover and slipped it inside my notebook case and ditched the packaging ( You know those pesky customs officers )
Yes, Apple products are MUCH cheaper over there if you compare rand for rand. Apple's warrantee is also worldwide, so no worries there. I am just not sure if you will get away with storing the Mini in your suitcase or if you carry it in with hand luggage. If customs pulls you over for a random check this side, you are going to cough up tax for the purchase.

Thanks.
I thought that the warranty is only honored locally if u declare the item at customs and pay the duty.

When you claim on the warranty they do it with the serial number of the machine / device. You warranty is world wide.

My BTO mini finally arrived today.

Comparison between my mid 2011 Macbook Air and the late 2012 Mac Mini

Geekbench scores

Air
32-bit = 5459
64-bit = 5918

Mac Mini
32-bit = 11982
64-bit = 12966

This little machine screams along! Very happy with my purchase.

Yes warranty is worldwide but you have to have proof of purchase otherwise no go. I've had local Macs fixed under warranty without any receipts needed.
