Yeah, I get that, and I've probably watched too many of those clips myself.
IMO, folks need to keep the Air as close to base spec as they can to get the most value from it... Once you spec up into the R30k+ range, the size and weight don't beat the benefits of the base 14".
I would go with a base Air if it weren't for Apple's SSD shenanigans.
These M machines rely heavily on memory swap and the slower SSD will impact performance, especially later in it's life cycle.

Nothing I've seen says there's a huge difference between the two.
Save the money and go for the 8 core GPU.

One thing to keep in mind is the Air's $200 M1 to M2 price increase will likely be repeated by the M2 Pro's when they are released later in the year because of inflation in the USA. The weak rand won't help either, so now is a good time to buy the 14-inch M1 Macbook Pro.

I recently returned to SA and I guess I was spoiled by day 1 releases for years that even a 2 week wait seems insane to me. Does the SA market always get Apple products after release date?
The markup also seems crazy to me but I suppose that's just Apple for you. Has anyone gotten an official release date for the M2 Air? I love the midnight colour, but at the prices quoted the 2020 13" M1 pro deals out right now are very tempting.

Pricing & specs aside, this must be the best looking laptop they've released in a long time.
As far as i see it, the only two Apple products that have already priced in US inflation are the Mac Studio Display and the Macbook Air M2. Everything else will need to go up 10-20% over the next 24 months or Apple will need to accept lower margins which i don't see happening.
Sadly, Day 1 releases are not a thing here.
Local pricing is decided by Core Group and we always pay a premium over and above our weak currency. Local Apple fans hate them as you can imagine.
If you don't have a good reason to get the 16GB version just go with the base spec for R23999 or the M1 for R18999. 8GB is perfectly fine for most people. If you need 16GB look at the 14 inch Pro if you are fine with the added thickness.

Just compared technical specs on the website. The two machines are not that different weight wise or dimensions wise.
The sweet spot is edging closer to 14” MBP 8|14 512|16. Much better screen and has ports. Keyboard is also better.

I do. My pc usage will be changing shortly. If they kept the same form factor the decision would be so easy. I would just go with a Pro, it's what I've always had but that's more cause I didn't like the look of the Air.
Also, speaking of the Core Group I'm torn between iCare and Apple Care. I really don't want to buy both and I think Apple Care makes more sense for me.
Has anyone been able to use Apple Care here without any major issues? If you can't use Apple Care here is the free warranty from Incredible Connection any good?
My 2019 Pro recently packed up and fixing stuff here is so expensive that I probably need a warranty. Plus, in SA you seem to pay to have your laptop looked at and they don't seem to look very hard idk not a pc repair person maybe we have brilliant repair centres and I'm just salty that it broke.
