My immediate reaction to these prices were that we were being utterly ripped off by the SA distributor, Core.
However, if we look at for example the 13" Macbook Pro with 256GB SSD which retails in the states for $1499, and we multiply that by the current exchange rate (R12.11 / $ at the time of writing) we get R18152.89. We then have to add 14% VAT, which brings it to R20694.29. If you were to organise shipping for that laptop by yourself (package probably slightly over 2kg), you could probably get by with $75 = R908.25. This brings the total to R21602.54, which means that Core is still taking R896.46.
So it looks like Core is still taking more than it should, but at least the margin is not as great as I initially thought.
