As I mentioned, what you want to do works perfectly on a Mac, but another option is to go with a VM / Parallels.

My immediate reaction to these prices were that we were being utterly ripped off by the SA distributor, Core.

However, if we look at for example the 13" Macbook Pro with 256GB SSD which retails in the states for $1499, and we multiply that by the current exchange rate (R12.11 / $ at the time of writing) we get R18152.89. We then have to add 14% VAT, which brings it to R20694.29. If you were to organise shipping for that laptop by yourself (package probably slightly over 2kg), you could probably get by with $75 = R908.25. This brings the total to R21602.54, which means that Core is still taking R896.46.

So it looks like Core is still taking more than it should, but at least the margin is not as great as I initially thought.

Actually, they are. Remember, they will not be sold the stock from Apple at retail cost- they're a distributor, so are probably getting it quite a bit cheaper.
 
I know they get the stock from Apple at wholesale.

My point is that if they had sold that specific laptop at R21602.54, they would have had some kind of parity with the retail prices in the states (i.e. not making anything more than for example a reseller in the states, due to shipping costs and VAT). As it is, they're taking R896.46 more than that, which is a slightly smaller ripoff than I expected.

Still on the basis of them buying it at retail price from Apple (which would never happen), shipping it at consumer price levels, and adding a mark-up onto that. It's not really a valid comparison, because you're ignoring the mark-up that Apple themselves have coupled with the price, and it's still cheaper for someone to go through the schlep of importing a built-to-order device from Apple in the US than it is to buy locally.

I would wager that Core's mark-up is closer to R2-3k per device, taking into account wholesale pricing and cheaper import rates afforded to volume importers.
