New Mazda 2

Entry-Level Mazda2 Price Slashed by R50k for Limited Time

For a limited time, Mazda South Africa is offering the entry-level Mazda2 with a R50 000 promotional price saving.

The entry-level Mazda2 is now available in South Africa at a reduced, promotional price for a limited time – the Japanese automaker’s local arm slashing R50 000 off the Active Edition variant’s original sticker price. The opening gambit to the four-strong lineup, the Active derivative ships with a traditional audio system, replete with Bluetooth connectivity, a four-speaker sound system, manual air conditioning, a multifunction steering, and cloth upholstery for the seats. Safety items include a quartet of airbags, Isofix child-seat anchorages, and ABS with EBD.

Mazda2 Active Edition Price in SA

For a limited time, Mazda South Africa is offering the Mazda2 Active Edition at a reduced price of R271 500. Included in the price are a three-year/unlimited km service plan and five-year/unlimited km warranty.

As a reminder, the Mazda2 exclusively employs Mazda’s 1.5-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine. The naturally aspirated unit produces 85 kW and 148 N.m of torque, the latter available from 4 000 r/min. Two transmission options are available: six-speed manual and six-speed automatic. The base-spec, Active derivative is exclusively available with the former gearbox.

I have extensively researched entry level budget cars to purchase. I place a high value on engine, gearbox, safety and reliability. Mazda is the winner, no other brands have a quality auto gearbox like Mazda. VW might come close, but then it is paired with a crappy 1l turbo engine. Mazda is the clear winner, the only drawback of Mazdas, especially the 2, is that it tends to be smaller than its competition.

Suzuki/Toyota has a good 1.5 engine, but then the auto version has a crappy 4 speed auto. The CVT boxes are better, but still inferior to Mazda`s gearbox. Chinese cars are starting to get dual clutch auto gearboxes, it`s all the same gearbox, and it suffers from an annoying jerk pull away in 1st gear. Mazda has a quality 6 speed auto box. The manuals are also superior by having a 6th gear, those Suzuki/Toyota manuals lack of a 6th gear is a drawback.

Verdict

We can’t be distracted by the fact that the Mazda 2 is in its twilight years and a replacement is expected in the next few years. Rumours suggest production of this generation will be stopping around the middle of 2026.

Should you buy one? Certainly, it’s priced higher than some of its established rivals while offering less standard specification, but you might choose to prioritise build quality and driving engagement by opting for the Mazda. It’s a good car but comes at a price and it’s starting to show its age. Newer and fresher rivals simply offer more for less.

Fiesta fun without reliability woes: Why you need a Mazda 2

The appeal of the Mazda 2 grows more and more as prices become cheaper and cheaper

Most mainstream cars have life cycles of seven or eight years, even in today's fast-paced environment - which means the third-generation Mazda 2 was one of the UK's oldest cars when it bowed out in 2025 after more than a decade on sale.

More impressive than its longevity, though, is its enduring appeal. When it was new in 2014, we liked it a lot and 10 years later, we still liked it a lot, maintaining its four-star verdict and saying: "The Mazda 2 remains something of a hidden gem for supermini buyers and it now also feels like a proper throwback of the finest type."

It still feels fresh today, making it the automotive equivalent of one of those ads you see for anti-ageing medications: "Doctors hate the Mazda 2 for this one simple trick!"

So what's the secret? It's starting with a solid base and then nipping and tucking through the years.
