Hallo all.

I am looking to buy these

MB:
ASUS AMD Socket AM3, AMD 785G, 5200MT/s, 4xDual DDR3 1800(O.C), Onboard VGA (HDMI), 1xPCI-x16(Hybrid CrossFire), 1xPCIx1, 2xPCI, 1xATA133, 6xSATA (Raid 0,1,10), Gbe Lan, 8ch-Sound HD, Max 12xUSB, microATX

mb = R1002

CPU:
AMD Athlon II X2 250, 2MB L2 Cache, AM3, 3.0Ghz

cpu = R666

I am also looking for an external HD: 500gb or terab, USB powered if anyone knows about a nice priced one somewhere :)

Anyone know of a cheaper price for these items? I have googled and could not find any.

Ps anyone from EQ on the forums that I can ask?

A bit of everything. Actually helping a friend who insisted on these parts...

He does game, but he also runs a couple of programs for Eng. such as matlab and some drawing programs like solid works.
 
It looks good.

I'd suggest you buy a 500GB/1TB hard drive and a separate enclosure for it. It can work out a bit cheaper at times and you won't void any warranties if you want to change the drive in the enclosure
 
450 for a 500gb and like R300 for an enclosure so like R750 for everything.

Maybe get a terabyte external, it'll be like R1000 or so.

I thought quad cores were better for that?

Mobo seems overkill, and could include things he doesn't need that push up the price.
 
If you want USB powered (which you mentioned) these guys prices are wrong(non usb-powered). 500GB is the highest you can go as there arent really 750GB/1TB 2.5" HDD's yet. A 500GB is gonna set you back just under a grand

2.5" and 750GB/1TB portable USB-powered drives are out.

That would be the way to go. Only it seems with AMD cheapies that most of their entry-level boards only have 2 SATA ports, whereas Intels have 4 SATA ports. I would recommend an Intel G31/G41-based motherboard (R500) and an Intel Q8300 (R1500). Unless you find a cheap AMD board with more SATA ports, or if 2 SATA ports is OK for your friend.

Western Digital Scorpio 2.5" 1000GB going at around R2500. 500GB is far better value.
