guys I am torn between these two options, which should be faster???

Socket 775 is dead. Rather go AM3 which will allow you to upgrade to a 6 core machine if you want to in the future. An i5 won't get you that. Why not look at the Athlon II 435 though? That extra core will help a lot.

AMD Athlon II X3 425, 1.5MB L2 Cache, AM3, 2.7Ghz will outperform the AMD I listed previously?

Well to be honest look at the price of the 550 you could have a look at the Athlon II 630 which gives awesome performance for the price.

How about this I have a R4000 max limit for my upgrade. I am running a 9800gtx+ so no need for new graphics card there, I need 4GB ram, 1TB HDD 7200 only , MB + CPU. the shop I will most likely use is PCInt.co.za although I am happy to use prophecy as both are just down the road from me, what is the best combo for that cash? I am using it primarily for gaming.

I cannot go over this... I am getting married next year and with some shopping around I have been able to reduce that cost to R78000 including a short cruise.

I honestly do not understand why people buy AMD.

Go for a I3 or I5.

Definitely get the Athlon II 630 then. All the new games can make use of four cores.
