The t&c of the new MTN Ayoba competition says free smses & free minutes cannot be used to enter the competition...Does this mean the competion is for prepaid only?Normally contract subscribers are always told they get a free phone,if the minutes are also free what are contract subscribers paying for?

I think it just means that you'll be charged for entering the competition.

It just means you can't use your 50 free sms's and enter 50 times for free. You'll pay for each entry etc.

How are top up subscribers going to be charged...the monthly fee is fixed.

It will be removed from your allowable amount. ie given R200 worth at beginning of the month, R2/min to enter competition.

BTW, with a top-up account, free minutes do not apply? Is this correct?

This is a very good question as it applies to all rated shortcode and longcode services. Shortcodes are 5 digits long and most are 3xxxx and 4xxxx. Longcodes are normal numbers that are "tagged". It means 1 to 10 extra digits can be added to the single number.

Longcodes exists in South Africa because networks do not allow people to send out messages on shortcodes, you can only send a message to them (and get billed for its relavent value).

Longocodes are usally the number (which is tied to a certain value from R0.50 - R50) and a shortcode used as a tag to help identify it. Also you can reply to the longcode + its tag and this gets identified by its tag as being associated with a service / shortcode.

Enough of all this detail and allow me to get back to my point.

So all shortcodes and longcodes are rated number (R0.50 - R50) and since any "free" SMS is only for non-rated local numbers, sending a message to shortcode/longcodes does not qualify as free. You get billed. Its the same with international numbers, except you cannot send to an international shortcode / longcode.
