New MTN EDGE Pricing

Do you replace my ISP and provide email account/s and internet gateway ala MyWireless and IBurst, or do I still need to pay an independent ISP? Is this the same as Vodacom?

This is certainly a great forum.

I took out a Vodacom 3g contract in January as soon as it became available. For economic reasons -- I was able to tell Hellkom to shove their R2500 per month ISDN line. I kept my MTN contract for voice calls. I am not sorry I did this, it has already paid for the life of the contract.

Regarding jpretorius' question, my understanding is that Edge will operationally be the same as GPRS; a internet gateway is included, but not any email facilities. This is really not an issue these days: for example, Google offers free email services (including POP and SMTP) with a 2 GB inbox. If anybody wants one of these puppies, PM me and I will set it up for you. I have 50 to give away.

Hi JP
I can tell you that I have recently been using MTN's GPRS service to occasionally ( b'cos of the existing price ) check my e-mail ( hosted by MWeb ) using the pop3 server : pop3.mweb.co.za and smtp server : mail.mtn.co.za

I am sure that you could also use the same smtp server if your e-mail account was hosted by a free service, so I don't see why you should have to pay an ISP as well.

Hope this Helps.

I know that my Nokia6820 is EDGE provisioned/capable, but it isn't 3G capable :(.

Hi IC

I was recently told the following in a PM from MTNbb :
Quote..
I need to check during the week but I believe the 6820 supports a nominal 118.4 kbps downlink and 59.2 kbps uplink on EDGE (ie half the available speeds).
..End Quote

Hope that his info was incorrect at the time of sending this to me, but I think he/she (?) knows what he's talking about. Oh, Well, I suppose that speed is better than standard GPRS so I shouldn't be complaining.

I just wish that these technical things were better explained in the nokia, etc brochures and that someone in the sales office knew what they were talking about - I spent extra money at the MTN shop to buy this specific phone b'cos it had EDGE ( now it has 1/2 an Edge ).

I wonder if MTN will charge me 1/2 for the EDGE service ??

does anyone know if the nokia 6230 allows for full spead edge access...i dont wanna try anything till the 11th when the prices become a bit more reasnoble...

mtn offer an email account for all subscribers - go to mtn loaded off their website and register. it is (or at least was last time i checked) accessible via the pop3 protocol as well.
later -

Nokia 6230
# EDGE* Class 10 (4+1, 3+2): Speed up to 236.8 Kbit/s
# GPRS (General Packet Radio Service)* Class 10 (4+1, 3+2)

I feel like I have to qoute Denzel Washington from the movie Philadelphia. Would someone explain this to me like I'm a 4 year old?
Classes and whatnot.

stepper - search through posts i have made on the subject. i have given detailed explanantions on EDGE and Device class elsewhere on this forum (think most of it was under GPRS Congestion). Your questions should all be answered there. If you still have any questions, post them and i will gladly assist.

thanks, just did that.
I will read up more and double up with google.

My apologies. I was too hasty yesterday in my criticism of the Autopage shop & MTN call center. I’m afraid I got so excited about the new offerings that I sort of skipped over the fact that they will only be available next week. I am sure that it is a huge task to get staff and affiliates up to speed on a whole new technology.

See, I’m back to my old warm and fuzzy feelings for MTN. I’ll forgive them the long delay because I think that what they have come up with really is the most cost effective broadband system in South Africa. No, not for everybody. Not for those kids that need to download humungous globs of “music” – what makes you think I’m an old fart? But the likes of me must make up a huge potential market. 200Mb/month will cost less than my present ISP and dial-up costs, and it will be more than enough to do all my email (2Mb/day) plus plenty hours of Google. All this assumes that MTN will not have the teething problems of MyWireless, Iburst and even ADSL. I just somehow believe they won’t.

Now I’m sure that all this brown-nosing buys me the right to ask another question. What are the actual mechanics of connecting up? Am I correct in assuming that if I buy a phone with EDGE and Bluetooth and I have a Bluetooth port on my PC, that the PC will see the phone as a modem?

Oh, and I think my request yesterday for a list of EDGE compliant phones is still relevant. I bought a British magazine called What Cellphone. It does a comparison of 120 phones, and yes I know that different models are marketed in different countries, but they are more than 70% common. There is no mention of either EDGE or GPRS+ and instead they list HSCSD. I also have yet to see EDGE mentioned in any of the local phone brochures. A listing of EDGE/GPRS+ phones would help us on the forum and I am sure it would be of value to your dealers and outlets as well.

IMHO, your best bet would be the Nokia 6630, as you are in a similar position to myself. It has a USB data cable that comes with it, and is generally problem free. Also - its EDGE and 3G ready, so when MTN launch 3G in Jun, if you get coverage in your area, you will automatically connect to the faster network without having to change any settings on your PC.

Hello. New here!
I think that thread only lists Nokia's because they are really the only phone manufacturers doing Edge in a big way. I think some of the other guys are catching up, but Nokia got a head start.
Take a look at this website, its got a pretty up to date list of known edge products around the world. Sadly I think we will only get some of them in SA :-(

The document you should be taking a look at is:

Hope thats useful!

Thanks for the links.
<my_opinion>
I think RF-Group has some sort of hold on the S.African market so it easier to get Nokia products as opposed to some other products from other manufacturers.
