word of caution: make sure that monochoice lose the ruling on sharing the decoder with new entrants, because I betcha the new entrants will have similar decoders, and will be compelled to share.

HD was launched in 1998 in USA & 1989 in Japan.

I would not mind getting onto their trial list for this specific decoder. I assume they have a hidden HD channel trialing as we speak. Judging by the number of open days I am hearing about where DSTV gives full bouqet access to restricted users they are tweaking something...

Looking at the appalling quality of the action-X channel for example, they must be trailing HD, or maybe that is just normal?

I'm disappointed that that thing does not support 1080p. Surely all video signals will eventually be transmitted at 1080p?

Oh I get it now: If they roll out a 720p-limited device now then they can force you to buy a new 1080p box in a few years' time.

There are no boxes with 1080p, as 1080p is not a broadcasting standard. If they wait for 1080p to become a broadcasting standard before launching HDTV, the competition will destroy them.

1080i50 is basically the same as 720p as 1080i is 'interlaced' so you need 2 frames to make an image where as with the p (progressive) you only need 1 frame as it produces a whole image on one frame. 1080p is miles ahead, quality wise, from 1080i

If it has an 'i' on the end of it, it is not worth reading the first part. The 'p' on the end is where the good stuff comes from.
