New Notebooks, Recap.

Well how's this for timing: work ran a little over time. My boss is waiting for me - steak&beer special at our local. I put my MacBook in my backpack, gather my things, fling my backpack over my shoulder, and just then I realised I never zipped up the notebook pouch. Sent the MacBook flying. Now this has happened before and never caused any problem, so I didn't think much about it. But I just opened it up at home - dead as a doornail :(

With the new macbooks you'll end up having a nice big dent in the chassis as well.

Thank God, DVDRW super drive & 2GB RAM comes standard for both 2.0GHZ 2.4GHZ models...for a long time Apple has been ripping us off by making a CDRW only model...

Or a dented floor - who's to say how strong these unibodies are? :)

Guys expect these machines to be at least 20% more expensive than a current Macbook/Pro... the current batch were brought in at the old exchange rate... the new Macbooks/Pro I can assure you will compensate for that...

My guess is you'll pay around 14-16k for the Macbooks and around 20k-25k for the Macbook Pro 15".

I think a great seller will be the new Glass Cinema Display... and i have to be honest, what the hell is a DisplayPort?????

I hate the fact that Apple sometimes keeps introducing proprietary ports --which forces you to use Adapters in order to use with the standard ports.

DisplayPort to DVI ,How much do you think this adapter will be? R400?

Thats ridiculous !!!!

Hmm... Not sure if anyone has mentioned it yet but the Macbook and Macbook Pro's have no Firewire 400 Ports? :-(

That means the Macbook's will have only USB ports on em! I see tho that they will have the Express 3/4 slot which means some of the accessories we can get our hands on will work. Like the Lacie Dual Firewire Express connection and tons of the E-Sata Stuff!

I have no firewire devices so it suits me perfectly, most portable disks today are e-sata anyway.

Aren't 800 ports backward compatible? ;)

it seems silly that the Apple Cinema display doesn't work on the 2 Apple machines that need an external display? Mac Pro and Mac mini... or is just me?

But Bwana, the new Macbook's don't even have FW800... :-(

Just plain 'ol USB!

Apple has made the Macbook a more graphically capable machine so that people can start using their Pro-Aps to their full potential. Heck I won't be surprised if Final Cut would run pretty ok on the new Macbook's.

The problem lies that if ppl are going to use the Macbook as a more Pro machine they have left all support out for Firewire ingest from video Camera's, Being Able to plug in Lacie drives to use as File Vaults with Aperture, or even storage for FCP video... etc.. I can go on forever...

Thats why I mentioned that we are lucky they added the Express 3/4 slot so that we can still use our peripherals but it means we will have to buy the relevant cards...

Those edges where my palm is gonna rest look kinda sharp.

I guess it sucks for those wanting to use the MB as a MBP but I'm always going to opt for the 17" screen anyway so as long as they continue to support FW on those I'm not overly concerned.

The disappearance of FW, albeit gradual, has been evident since they removed it from the iPod.

I am rather dismayed by the glossy screens though!

After watching the video on the Macbook, Jony Ive explains exactly what they were going for... The Macbook is not aimed at pro users at all.. All apple is trying to do is not keep their best technology for the premium products but to get it right down to the most popular consumer level machines... most consumers (general everyday mail readers, internet users/ gamers) don't use firewire... so why have it. People like you and I (not your average consumer) will find this frustrating but I agree with apple, if it's not going to be used, then get rid of it. IMHO, The macbook now is what the Macbook air should have been! Powerful and sexy! :)

I use firewire on my MB and Mini all the time.
Makes me wonder if they're gonna remove it for the new Mini's as well.

Edit: so I wonder what the story is with the Mini, are they going to be refreshed soon or wil they vanish...

I hear you... but what do you FW for? Target Disk?? Maybe an external Hard drive... 99% of home users don't use TDM and if they do have an external drive, i'll bet my lunch today its USB 2.0...

For tech support FW is the best. I've got a DVD Writer and a external that I use the Firewire with, so yeah, it's pretty useful to me.

Seriously ... it's a shiny overpriced piece of **** for $900

LOL!!

but you forget the market that Apple caters to are people want builtin functionality and ease-of-use and are prepared to pay for this.

Take Airport express for example, super expensive for what it does, but its crazy simple to use and does it's job really effectively. exactly what a Mac user is looking for.

with the new displays, they looking freakin hot, have the built-in charger for your notebook (ie less clutter on the desk), iSight, Mic and built-in speakers... what more could one ask for from a Home users perspective??? (Remember this product is aimed at home users given its lack of DVI for Mac Pros etc and currently only compatible with the New Macbook and 15" Macbook Pro) --- people like my dad are going to go nutty for this display!! :)

oh without a doubt, from a techs point of view FW is awesome even indispensable, and that's why i say we as techs are going to be crazy frustrated without it (Macbook Air anyone???) ... but not joe blog at home! and Apple built the Macbook for Joe Blog! :)
