Every car you buy was a new one at some stage. Did you sell your dud to someone else or scrap it?
There is a family friend who fixes cars for a living. He offered to buy the bakkie. I sold it to him at a loss, but I was just gatvol. And the wife hated the thing. He put in a brand new engine and he is still driving it 16 years later.

Decide on a budget and buy the best car for the money. More often than not a second hand one will be the best you can get. E.g. a 2/3/4 year old Merc/BM/Lexus/Volvo etc can be had for the price of a new Cherry/Ford/VW/Tata etc and will always be the better buy.
So, mostly second hand, though out of the 33 cars I've owned so far, many were bought new.
33 cars ??

So he bought a dud and fixed it up. At least he was family and knew what he was in for. How do you prevent buying a dud second hand car?
There are no guarantees, I guess. I've been lucky. Like I said, I take my time. It also doesn't hurt if you build a relationship with one or two salespeople.

Since 1977. Yet, still a lot. Often with excuses to justify it, 3 at a time, ........and 5 motorcycles too. I wasted a LOT of money!
You've been buying cars longer than I am alive lol (83). So far I'm on number 3, but I must say I had to kill the urge twice tbro9the years
