Hi all

If you've noticed the couple of threads I've posted regarding new pc hardware, then you would know that I'm looking into upgrading my PC. My current list is the following excluding hard drives which are already accounted for :


Intel Core i7 2600k Processor-3.40GHz, - R2 599

Samsung 4GB DDR3 RAM - R199

Antec KÜHLER H2O 620 Cooling System - R499

ASUS 21.5" Wide 1920x1080 ,Full HD-Black, LCD monitor - R 899

ASUS P8H61-M LE/USB3 Motherboard - R 699

UniQue 500W ATX Power Supply - R 349

NZXT Guardian 921 RB- R 549

Microsoft Wireless Desktop 800 Keyboard and Mouse - R 229

These prices are judged from overseas, with the exchange rate. Please broadcast your opinion here, and tell me areas where I can improve or if I've left something out, Also please remember that I'm operating on a budget of R6000. Times are tough these days ;)
 
Are you going to over-clock?

If so, you're going to need a P*/Z* board if I'm not mistaken. Also I don't think value RAM will get you very far. I ask because you're getting a liquid CPU cooler.

If not, drop the liquid CPU cooler. The stock cooler is good enough if not OC'ing. Also drop the 'K' version and just get a plain 2600.

Also, try getting a better PSU from a more reputable name, like Corsair or Antec to. They do make a cheaper series of PSU which will probably be more reliable than a 'Unique'.

Tell us what you're going to be doing with this system. Are you going to game?

A lot depends on what it's being used for.

Some problems:

PC deserves better than Value RAM. :p Perhaps Corsair Vengeance 2 x 2GB DDR3-1600 ?

PSU is a no-no, get something from Antec High Current Gamer range / Corsair CX range (HCG better).

Entry mobo, no OCing therefore no need for xxx-k CPU. If OCing, you will need P67/Z68 chip set.

Is that the entry LCD with VGA only? You might want one with DVIHDMI (superior connection).

I am not seeing a vga card so that PSU should be fine if you don't need a vga card. I would drop the 2600 and get the 2500k and get a 23/24" monitor.

Sorry guys for not posting sooner, yes I am going to game and overclock. I'm also going to be using it for high end video editing and burning blu-ray discs. The reason I don't want to get the plain 2600 version is because it isn't unlocked. I will check around for better RAM and PSU's andwhat is the cheapest P67/Z68 motherboard made by ASUS, I just love their BIOS :D

Ask yourself though is the 2500k going to give you 1k less performance over the 2600k? I doubt it.
 
If you plan to do "high-end" stuff then buy components deserving of such.
You should also amend your price expectations to suit.

A 2600k costs in the region of R3000, distributor or not. Little difference in price between the 2600 and 2600k so rather stick to the k.
You'd be better off getting some decent RAM. 4GB is not enough by any means for your use. My suggestion would be Corsair 2x4GB 1600 Vengeance, or some equivalent Kingston.
For video rendering a Z68 motherboard will come in handy, as it allows the CPU to use its GPU. It makes a massive difference. This however costs around R1600-R2400, depending on the model.
Your power supply... yeah..... I'd suggest buying a quality brand. Antec or Corsair. A 650W should do you well.
The Antec Kuhler is fine, since it's manufactured by the same company that does the Corsair coolers.
Your screen is going to be a problem. It will only have a D-Sub input.... more expensive screens have HDMI/DVI. I'd suggest that you buy a man's size screen. 23" or preferably 24".

I have CUD, I love the bragging rights, and the hyper-threading should help add performance for video editing as said by Intel

One of my friends has a FX-8150, he says it barely matches up to his brother's i5-2500K

Is that maxing all 8 cores? We know it cannot cope with the intel's core for core but when all cores are rocking i wonder.

I have no idea so i would also like to know :D.

Scratch that i just google and ya boy the intel klaps it :eek:. Maybe when windows 8 is around the amd will finally be worth something hehe.

I'm assuming you're going to import?
Overseas prices are overrated.... you need to consider duties/landing costs.

The 2600k on the stock cooler can OC to 4.2GHz without "issues". It is however recommended to get a proper cooler. Cooler temperatures lead to a longer lifespan and better performance. You can look at the Antec or Corsair air coolers, they work pretty well too.
I can overclock my 2500k to 4.6GHz with the Corsair H60 and still have temps of around 40C.

Oh, and do note that for gaming, there is as of yet, little to no performance increase from the 2500 to the 2600. Even my 2500 doesn't max out all its cores in games yet (BF3, etc). My cores [2 and 3] are consistently 5-6C cooler than the rest because there's nothing to push them.

With all cores maxed out it couldn't cope with his bro's i5 2500k (OC'ed to 4.2 GHz). But I've seen some extremists overclock their FX-8150 to anywhere from 6-7,5 GHz, one guy holds the world record for OC'ing a CPU with a FX-8150 @ 8.5 GHZ then I can't tell which would be better.
