New PC - Opinions

I checked the new specials on today, actual price is slightly less than what was posted above, VAT included is around a couple hundred more for both products.

What price list?
List it with VAT. You're not a business. Else you'll end up disappointed.

hehe yeah that explains the impossible prices. I think you just rocked his world...

I'm sorry in case you haven't noticed, I'm operating on a budget of R6000 base price, excluding VAT, if you add 14% VAT onto R6000 it would equal R6850. I was well aware of that when I posted this thread. Now if I had operated on a base budget of R6850 then the total excluding VAT would've been close to R8000. Do I need to explain it in another language to you or is English fine? Ever since I've posted on this thread it's as if you've got something against me.

You would have been better off mentioning you have R6850 to spend and not R6k.... mentioning VAT makes a rather big difference.

When buying from Amazon (electronics) you should add 2% for bank fees and anything from 10-25% for customs and duties and shipping... sometimes it works out cheaper than local, sometimes not.

The reason I didn't want to put R6580 is because most electronics prices are listed excluding VAT thus I would've had R6000 worth of components excl VAT

:lies:

Only distributors list prices exVAT.
Public stores do (by law) list prices including VAT.

Correct me if I'm wrong, Evetech, Wootware and RebelTech list prices excl VAT

Lol dude I'm not against you, just entertained by the logic with which you shop. If you don't want opinions, dont ask for it on a public forum. All prices listed on those websites include VAT.

Good luck placing that order at Rectron/Sahara...

Here's me correcting you. They're all public stores listing prices including VAT.

Checked Evetech a few weeks ago and they were giving prices showing price including VAT and excluding and since I am also buying from amazon.com where everything is excluding VAT. I decided to shop around for up to R6000 on items excluding VAT knowing that it would add up to R6 850.

R 5,563.96
(Including VAT)

R 5,299.00
(Discounted Price - INC VAT

That's a quote from an Evetech page.

If you look at "checkout prices", you will always find the price excluding and including VAT. That's how any business operates, especially when there is a possibility that you might claim VAT back from SARS.

Amazon also does this.
The price you see on Amazon's items..... are including VAT.

Okay thanks for clearing that up, but when importing goods you have to pay VAT http://www.sars.gov.za/home.asp?pid=180

Yup you take amount x 10% x 14%

So that would be R 1891 x 110% then x 114% right. The only drawback though is that if there is a problem with the items it costs a lot to ship it back to get repaired.

The customs value of any imported package is 110% of its value, and then you add duty, if any, which is determined by the nature of the goods, and then, iirc, you add VAT on customs value + duty (or vice versa, but it works out the same).

So if duty is 10%, then the calculation is as follows:

1891 x 1.1 = 2080 (customs value)

2080 x 0.1 = 208 (duty)

(2080 + 208) x 0.14 = 320 (VAT)

1891 + 208 + 320 +30 (clearance fee) = R2449 (total cost)

edit: This isn't meant to reflect how much it will actually cost you, this is just an example of how it would work if the R1891 item attracted 10% duty.

Can you explain the 0.1 to me? never knew about that

That example is just if the item has 10% duty, i.e. whatever is being brought in falls under a category that attracts duty, don't know offhand of an example, maybe cigarettes or alcohol. It wasn't meant to be the actual price that the op will pay. So I'll clarify the example.
