Hi guys

Last week my PC got hit in a thunderstorm...
Seems like my Motherboard and CPU has gone.

My insurance company will pay out for new parts, but I now have to decide which..

My current system (damaged):
CPU : AMD 5600+
MB : ASUS M2N-SLi-Deluxe

What I want to know from you guys, is which of the following I should opt for, and where's best to buy it:

CPU : E6750(1333FSB) vs Q6600(1066FSB) (Is the R600 price difference woth it)
MB : ASUS P5N-E-SLI - Nvidia 650i chipset vs Intel 'Frostburg' Intel G33 chipset (Again : Is the R300 price difference on the ASUS really worth it?)

I'm NOT looking to overclock.
Which would you opt for, if budget IS an issue?

Appreciated

I think the extra 1333 bus is worth the extra money in the long run, provided your motherboard supports it...

Are you looking to go SLi? If so I would go for the Asus. Straight up Intel boards aren't so hot...

If you're not going SLi, take a look at the Gigabyte P35-DS3P. An awesome board, shouldn't set you back more than R1600.

The price difference on the E6750 is worth it as you have almost 300MHz more on the FSB, which will count alot.

For the Motherboard, I would suggest the Intel Johannesburg mainboard, as it will have the support for the 1333MHz FSB CPU.

I say go for the Nforce 650 chipset. Performance wise it is superior to the intel chips.

The Q6600 is an amazing CPU. worth the R600, YES!

I would try to avoid Intel Branded boards.

look for a good ASUS or Gigabyte board instead.

Recent benchmarks has show NO DIFFERENCE between a CPU with 1066FSB vs 1333FSB. Take a Motherboard that supports it yes, but for current CPU's it makes no difference.

The Q6600 is a great overclocking chip. Since you're not planning on overclocking I'd recommend taking the E6750. But if you have the money, take the Q6600 :) As Kasyx said, are you planning on using SLi? If you are, I highly recommend the P5N-E SLi! If not, go for the Intel board. I'd actually recommend the P5N-E SLi in any case, come to think of it :D

Hope this helps :)

The reason I'm not planning on overclocking is :
1* - I don't know how...
2* - I've got crappy RAM (2x1GB Hynix DDR800)

It's actually quite simple to overclock and there are TONS of online guides which will help you with that. And the RAM shouldn't be a problem, you can run it unlinked on the P5N-E SLi which means it keeps running at 800MHz whilst your CPU runs at a higher speed. :)

You could get a mild overclock with the ram that you have. Even a bit of an overclock helps.
There are heaps of howto's on the interweb that detail some overclocking basics.

Is there any dealers on this forums that will understand if my insurance pays them an amount (for the 5600+ and M2N MoBo) , and I pay the balance?
If so : Who?

Oh yeah, and thanks for the advice guys... :)

I'm not sure, there ought to be?

No problem, mate :) Have you decided what you want to buy, or do you need to sleep on it? :D

For the time being the choice depends on the use of the PC. If it's for pure gaming then go for the dual core. If it's for applications rather than gaming then go for the Quad Core.

Mine is a mixture of both, hence the overclock :)

YUP!!! It's purely for gaming....
So it's better to buy the dual core then???
IMO anyone that buys a R13000 pc for running apps only must be somewhere close to insane :p

Oh yeah : BTW : I've got a 320MB 8800GTS , and I'm not planning on running it SLi - EVER :)

If you're not planning to overclock, usually yes. And I'd still recommend the P5N-E SLi, I know about 5 people who have one and swear by it :)

OK, I've decided to go with the E6750.

I really hope that I'm not making a mistake, but anyways : If I am, I'll have the difference (R600) to help upgrade again in 6 months' time.

Good choice, If im not mistaken then very few games are optimized for quad core.
Anyone know for sure if thats the case?

Man i don't know. Some of the new games are already starting to be optimised for quads_ Crysis ans Alan lake. And im also a complete overclocking noob but trust me it's really not that difficult to get a small OC. Most people seem to get an nice 3ghz even with the stock cooler.

If you don't mind upgrading again in a few months then sure i suppose the E6750 is a good choice. Just make sure you get a mobo that supports 45nm processors. A lot of the newer ones do already.

Me personally would go for the quad(as i will be doing in a month or so).

True, there aren't that many games optimized for quad core. But even without the optimization the performance is nothing short of staggering... I went from an AMD 3800+ to an Intel Q6600 and my frame rates have almost quadrupled! :D

Good choice, Zenbaas :)

Yeah WKJ cant wait! I just don't have the buck to upgrade all the time so this is my way of future "proofing" for a while. I now just need to wait to see how the new ATI cards perform and the updated gts for that matter before i can get all my stuff together. And waiting for the suppliers to get stock of my case(Cooler master 690 :D) This will be my first build so im super excited!
