I got one of those surge protector plugs and they work!
sometime last year i went lanning over a weekend and forgot to take the surge protector with. So i had to connect the pc to the wall socket the traditional way (just the kettle plug at the back, no surge protector), soon as i plugged it in sparks started flying out of my psu. (unluckily for me, the psu was out of warranty)
So yeah, i think you should get one of those things. When i used it i never had any problems, when i hadn't used it it costed me quite a bit
The one i have is an AC DC dynamics "brand", got it for R100
