New PSU needed (got R1600)

Why won't they swap it? It doesn't take all that long to check for damage - I took a HDD in there the other day and they replaced it on the spot.

Perhaps they can do it immediately. There's normally a few days wait though. I'd imagine that it would be a short wait as they wouldn't exactly be able to test much. :D

Is it possible the PSU's "bang" could affect the rest of my hardware?

I didn't smell anything or see any smoke - just sounded like somebody took a shot at me with a 9mm
 
my PSU has done that before..went pop :/ took my cpu and mobo and ram down with it !

but anyway.. ya for your rig.. 750watts would probably be more then enough oomph :P

rather see if you can get it swapped out, then spend the R1600 on upgrading your screen ;)

Buy another Corsair but definately don't buy a Gigabyte. Rectron only provides a 1 year warranty even though Gigabyte offers a 3 year warranty. Rectron is screwing over consumers by selling high end gigayte PSU's for similar prices but not honouring their full warranties.
 
I got the Corsair 650W for 3 years now. stilll going strong. If it pack up now I still got 2 years warranty left. O and what I like about some Corsair psu is that they got single 12v rail thats mighty powerful.

Thing I power off a 650w, MSI P45 platinum mobo, Intel Q9450 @ 3.2GHz 1.21V, Geforce GTX280, 4GB RAM, 5 HDD, 2 external hdd, mouse, keyboard, 8 Fans, DVD Writer and its keeping up with my system and still think it's overkill for my system.

I agree with killadood return it. you can always spend that money on something else like a cooler for your 4870x2 http://www.prophecy.co.za/arctic-cooling-accelero-xtreme-4870x2-cooler-p-51156.html. If you already got a cooler then just save the money for you next system.

Rectron only covers the 1 year the next 2 years it's with gigabyte self. they will return the product. They not allowed to refuse to replace PSU for the rest of the 2 years or they will have big problems.

so it seems I was just unlucky with mine, since you guys are still recommending corsairs..

I just find it funny that an overkill psu should be able to pop! wtf?
I don't even have that much stuff running on it yet ?

Im running the HX620W and its still going strong...

I dont think it popped because of the load, surely your system was a walk in the park for that PSU :confused:

Maybe just a small component that failed.. which then caused something to pop! :eek:
 
OK - removed the dead PSU and the 4870X2 as well, and plugged in my trusty, rusty and dusty old PSU - no name on it, except for a "350W" sticker :D :D

got an old 6500GT in now too (PSU has no power cables for my ATI)

everything is a-workin, but I have yet to test the GFX card :erm:

...think it'l be OK if the mobo made it?:confused:


....man, this sucks - also only have 1 molex-to-SATA power connector...all my HDD's are sata-type powered, and my PSU is molex only =/

i've literally got NOTHING on my C: which is now running :(

It was probably a power surge. Eskom's power isn't very reliable even when it works. If you don't want it to happen again get a ups.

As for what power supply, i'd say get the 650watt corsair.
 
On a side-note I have noticed that 1080p blu-rays work on a quad-core alone, since Im now only running a 6600GT with no drivers.

....just thought I'd add that.
 
Well there is a 750w corsair for R1200 in the link that i posted. On a side note...I noticed the power cable on my PC POWER 750w unit has a built in fuse in the plugs head :)

Why though would you have thought otherwise?

If they have stock they swop it out straight away, most hardware is like this, if they have no stock they will either refund of offer something similar.

that is why i could not understand dropping 1.6k only for it to get swopped out straight away, then you are sitting with a 2.5k and a 1.6k psu hahaha not cool :D
 
you don't understand man - I thought it might take much longer! I can't live without a PC - what the hell am I supposed to do without internet, games, movies and series?!

it was also just a backup plan INCASE they say they won't swap it at all, because they found a "dead bug" in it or something :D

now lets just hope this one doesn't go bang anytime soon, or make humming sounds when I install it (I have read about stuff like that on corsairs forum:erm:

Quick last question - say it was eskom's wonky power that caused the PSU to pop, what can I do to prevent it?

Except for a UPS, would those plugs help that you plug into the wall between the PC and the socket?

anyone know how much they cost?
