New relationships and AIDS test

if they take it the wrong way they are not mature enough to be engaging in a sexual relationship...

Agree 100%! Why risk your life (and others') to avoid a small bit of embarressment? Rather be grownup enough to take the test. In fact, people shouldn't be afraid to insist on a condom either

Suggest that you both take out life cover on each other's lives as you are both so valuable to each other (you'd insure any new valuable possession wouldn't you? ;) ).... then wait for the insurance company to send you for an HIV test! ;)

Assaulted a mugger in Mellville, Jhb. He came at me with a knife, I moered him till someone took me off him - two days later I got a call from the hospital where he was admitted saying he had hiv, and I need to come in ASAP. Went on ARVs for three months, then had to wait another three months for the final result.

Got the scars on my hands as a reminder - and the final test. Was 3 years ago in July :)

Police said it was in effect assault on the mugger because he had not taken anything from me - and I could not prove he intended too, considering the car guard witnesses vanished... Police said once discharged he could press charges... he never did, which is fortunate, considering I then would have probably been in court for murder :p

The ARVs were the worst three months of my life - thought I was dying.

The bit that slayed me... I've seriously sat here for at least 5 minutes laughing to myself. Yes I'm sad and easily amused I thought you buggered up and got it the wrong way round then I read your whole post. Glad you tested negative (I'm assuming you did :D).

Back on topic, and probably more relevant here in the U.K. STD'S/STI'S are very much a normal thing here (In my experience), couple that with the willingness of some girls here to fall preggers for the benefitts that come with it, it's imperative you klingfilm your snotsjambok.

As for HIV testing, I'd say make it a couple thing, both go at the same time, it may be awkward but just think of the relief and the subsequent relief buster afterwards when you both find out you're clear :D

Yeah (OT) I've seen that sort of thinking from our idiots in blue before. I reckon just make it all up next time. The truth doesn't win with them.

Negative :)

Sad reality these days, you don't have the right to protect yourself :(

Any woman who feels offended that you're questioning the trust in the relationship by requesting an AIDS test for you both (very important to say, "lets both go") is an ******* and she should get shot (or kicked in the panty)

I see it as taking it a step further, building onto the trust and having a fun relaxed relationship. If she refuses and/or gets offended by it, lean over to her and gently whisper in her ear "well, I guess this is as far as we go, there are tons of clean women out there for me"

I don't think its really an offensive thing, its all on how you approach it - don't say, "You need to get an AIDS test cause you look like skanky hoe, and I want to be sure."

its either a HIV Certificate or you get your ass out that door!!!! , lets be honest though, how many will still be in the relationship if your partner is positive?

"there are tons of clean women out there for me"

Not quite. I spared you the statistics so that the placebo might save you from it ;-)

Remember the 6 month window period. She could have some nookie with a street rat on Day 1 and become a carrier of the the virus on Day 1. Only around Day 180 will she test positive and if you've had some nookie with her before then, you're still fscked.

I think that's how it works. There isn't a DIY test capable of testing accurately for AIDS within the 6 month window period, or what?

Tell me I'm wrong? I love being proved wrong.

When meeting someone new romantically, I believe it would be prudent for the both of us to get tested with the number of AIDS cases in the country. Naturally, bringing this up on the first, most likely also the second date is out of the question; there must be some kind of intimacy (but not the kind that could potentially carry the infection, if there is one) before bringing up the subject.

What I'm interested to hear is if any women here would find this offensive? And when do you think would be a good time to bring up the subject?

Please keep in mind that all tests have a Window period. For the standard antibody test, that could be as long as 3 months. The Window period is the period during which a person is infected but the body hasn't manufactured enough antibodies (proteins which fight the virus) to be detectable on the standard test. There are more sensitive tests available too - but they also have window periods (albeit shorter) and they cost a lot more.

SO get lots of advice from the counsellor beforehand and be prepared for ideally two tests with a gap of abstinence and/or careful condom usage inbetween. This of course requires trust and commitment.

What was interesting was that when I asked the person I was with if they would get tested with me, she said that all the guys she had been with (not many ;) had asked her to do the same thing. So it doesn't seem as if it's only women who feel that it is important.
