Hey guys,

Was wondering if you guys could assist me in picking out a ADSL router.
Requirements are split into "must have's" & "optional".
Budget: between 1000 to 1200

Must have's:
- ADSL2+ capable (for future upgrades, if even)
- 4 ports 10/100
- Wireless N

Optional:
- USB/NAS and/or printer functionality

Been looking at netgears/Linksys/dlink models... etc, but want your opinions on something reliable.

Folks got a netgear with their telkom installation, keeps dropping connection. not blaming telkom, neither the router... but just saying.. i know there's a whole bunch of you which have gone through tons of routers and could share some insight into your experiences and recommendations.

Any help/suggestions will be appreciated.. ow and secondly, PM me if you willing to sell me what you got (if any good that is). lol

Cheers peeps,

JD

I would go for the Netgear DNG2200, very good, had no issues with it.

Got one, works fine and the USB works easily with external storage (got a 1tb sammie attached to mine) .
Good coverage too.

Only drawback I found is that there is no option to set it to bridged mode. :(

Any shops (walk in, no e shopping) where I could pick this baby up? Inc corruption? They sell netgear?

Just be aware that the DGN 2200 DOES NOT have bridge mode capabilities!

This would imply that you will not be able to dial PPPoE connections from the PC at all.

Sorry to be a bit of a noob here, but my tech knowledge is limited.. I'm in finance..
What would be a downside of not being able to dail pppoe connections from a pc?

You want to dial PPPoE connections from your PC:
1) if you want to split international & local traffic across multiple ISP accounts by dialing them from a PC since you don't have a decent router to do it for you
2) when you want to use an unshaped account for gaming, without having to switch accounts on the router itself
3) when you want to use your own account without letting every one else in the household using your account, which will be the case if you let the router dial it

So ja, if you've never done any of those things, then you really don't need a router with bridge mode support.

+1

I have two of them. No issues at all. I use them with customer fw though (DGTeam).
It also runs significantly cooler than my DG834GT.

As for splitting international and local... If I got uncapped, doesn't really matter? Or am I wrong?

Cool stuff . Gonna go for it :) tx guys

No, with uncapped you don't need it, unless you want to dial an unshaped account for playing games, while the others in your home are using the uncapped account.

Nah, it's just for me. No family/friends.. :)

But as for gaming, the only game I play is counterstrike.. A bit off topic, but last time I had mweb uncapped cs was fine? (over 6 months ago) .. Do I need another account to play it?

I'm playing Black Ops, CS1.6 and DotA on my 384kbps Mweb uncapped (shaped) and I have absolutely no issues with it in terms of latencies - but I have to add that I'm only playing after hours / on weekends since I'm working full time.

You really won't need another account, unless you want to play on a SAIX/Telkom hosted game.

Using an uncapped account makes things just so much easier :)
