New SA ID cards feature NFC-like technology

South Africa’s new electronic identity documents will include ISO/IEC-compliant proximity card technology, according to Gemalto
My what fancy technology you have ..........
All the better to spy on you my dear !

Pretty much exactly what I foretold about ten years ago

Will the CARD HOLDER / CITIZEN have access to the contents ?
If NOT -- WHY NOT !!!!!!!
This is quite clearly unconstitutional

I do NOT expect COSATU to arrange a march

Tin foil hat on a bit too tight there?

yah somebody now can copy my details my just swiping their phone on ID card the fraudsters must be chuffed

Just another hackable technology that will be hacked sooner rather than later ...

With the bunch of id10ts(Home Affairs) administering the system it's already doomed...

My thoughts exactly. What does he think is kept on the card? It's really just your ID book. Should we compromise the entire system and make it easily readable just so that the card owner can see his ID number, fingerprint hash, photo, etc - all things the cardholder knows anyway!

Like in any system, the biggest problem is with the end user. Like you must protect your ID book, credit cards, drivers license and wad of cash, you also need to protect your ID card. If you're paranoid about having it stolen/hacked, then leave it at home in a safe place and only take it with you when you know you're going to need it, like people do with ID books.

Man, when was the last time I was excited about new technology that came from the government! I just hope there is no delays in implementing it. If one looks at the chaos that was the Dept of Home Affairs for so many years, it just shows what can be done if there is leadership; also that not all Zumas are inept, looks like Pandor will continue her work.

Home Affairs has certainly improved over the years, took less than a week to get my passport renewed last year

Would this mean that we can hopefully do away with separate driver's licenses as well?

Lost my ID book so had to go get a new one last week and home affairs told me they'll only be giving the new cards to people who are getting their ID for the first time. Seems a bit silly to issue me a green book now but I guess it's a nice way to make more money.

Besides all the tin foil hatted folk should be in a flat panic if this worries them because Gemalto is the company that makes pretty much every SIM card in the world amongst many many other things.

If you wanted one company to rule the world with information they would be the perfect target.

just another device to hack, right after e-toll tags

a new potential market for ZA... tinfoil wallets :D

Actually, you laugh, but if you put a piece of tin foil in next to the card (either side), it'll shield it. I've tested this with my Lumia 920 and some NFC tags (because i'm curious, not paranoid). The foil can be in front of or behind the card, just needs to disrupt the reader's evil radiation field.

Exactly... Tinfoil is the perfect blocker. AdBlockPlus for ID cards :)

How does include ISO/IEC-compliant proximity card technology make it easier for you to hack?

Please attend the next ZaCon in October and bring an exam pad and come and learn from the masters
