Service providers will offer cheap data bundles for Facebook, Instragram and SABC.

I am a Netflix / Showmax / Spotify user but I represent only a small percentage of the viewing SA public - SABC and E TV command a huge percentage of the avid SA watches of soaps / news / lifestyle content - I think We should give the greater public the choice of Digital platforms to consume content in the same way we are using established global content providers - just saying

Unfortunately, these platforms do not allow the SABC to be competitive enough and to monetize content to its fullest marketing value
I wonder what kind of money the SABC earns by monetizing their YouTube videos. By getting greedy and moving their content to their own isolated pay-walled platform they could be shooting themselves in the foot, and any people crazy enough to sign up probably wouldn't even cover the cost of running the infrastructure, let alone make a profit.

Basically they could go from making some sort of profit every month by monetizing on other platforms, to asking for more tax funded bailouts to support their stupid streaming infrastructure.

I guess the best we can hope for is that the connected tenderprenure who wins the contract outsources it to someone who builds it on top of something like AWS where most of the infrastructure already exists and is well tested, and costs are based on its usage. Not a custom developed solution from the ground up that they have to pay a few million for every month to keep running regardless of no one using it.

People have internet don't want to watch SABC, and people who watch SABC don't have the internet. So how is that going to work?

Your Western colonialist thinking is getting in the way.

EDIT: That said, the SABC has rights to broadcast the Bundesliga so that's a plus. A very minor plus.

Besides the sheer stupidity of this all. Where are they going to get money for said Hardware and Software and licensing? Oh wait, that's right, SA will give them another few billions again. And again. And again. And Again.

Yes, but the SABC will push state policy to give themselves a competitive 'advantage', and I honestly don't believe they want to compete with other digital services. They do have a odd relationship with Multichoice and co., but this is another matter. Just remember the SABC wants to control the content served and published by other providers which is consumed within our 'digital' borders. Likewise with why they are pushing TV licenses to now include the digital spectrum.

The SABC won't give you the choice what you may consume or publish.

All in all, it is good that they are making the SABC more accessible, but they also want to be custodian over digital mediums.

Next up webmasters will need to post SABC news on their .za domains with a link to the SABC content ;)

The state broadcaster has been planning to launch a video and audio streaming services to compete against players like Netflix and Spotify for a while.

To compete with them and also to set precedent for VOD services and devices requiring licenses to operate and be sold.

This is just scheme to try and get TV licence fees from everybody with a internet connection
You get it! They need to have a foot in the streaming services to be able to make "streaming" license legislation valid. At least IMHO...

There is such a easy argument to be made when we take into account that they do this, it just serves to further prove data is data and if they can charge so little for it then, then they should be able to charge as little for all data.

........................... - I think We should give the greater public the choice .........................................
But, the greater public isn't paying their TV license. Only a small percentage is paying for the greater public.

Anyone here looking forward to DDoSing their servers if they go live?
