New Saol.com ADSL Pricing

I was really excited when Axxess/Hyperlink released their pricing. R349 for 30GB is excellent compared to what we've been paying for 3GB. But now with SAOL undercutting by R50, it actually worries me. As you guys have already mentioned....how low can they go without this becoming a problem, as mentioned by warichard (I think it was) in another thread.

Surely to goodness they can't give us something and then take it away. I would presume the ISP's would make sure Telkom approved before they offered a service. Once I have 30GB to use, I could never go back to 3GB, that would be plain crazy.

I wish RPM would contact Telkom to get their official standing on this. RPM, would you consider doing this?

surely, if Telkom increases their ADSL prices now it will go against what they argued. That they havent increased ADSL prices since its introduction. It will also then prove how screwed up they are if the rest of the world DECREASES prices while only Telkom INCREASES prices. It better stay the same or it proves them to be EVIL! mmmmmmokleT

They have proven more than once that they really don't care if they are perceived as evil... as long as their profit margin remains the same as the gdp of a small european country.

The problem is that we as a community are so used to being ripped off that when the market starts to become competitive we get scared because we think its unusual.

Personally living in a different country and returning its a shame its taken so long to happen.

Just want to point out to all the edgy people out there......What do you think is going to happen when the SNO becomes stable!!!! exactly this.. will happen.

give you an example.
overseas in switzerland there was the introduction to cable and adsl
the adsl ISP got scared of CABLE and introduced for an extra 20 Franks (basically 20 rand) an upgrade to t1 !!!
then cable turned around and offered 1024 connection at a lower price.
then ADSL countered etc etc.......

Finally it got to a stage and is currently stable at about 50-60 franks for a 1.8Mb line whether cable or adsl.

We in SA must not shy away from what is happening because in that case the people offering the service at lower prices will pick it up and stop lowering cost.

JUST MAKE SURE THAT YOU READ THE TERMS AND CONDITIONS!!!

anyway thinking out loud again......... Damn this is becoming a habit :D

This is just fantastic !!!! Cant wait to see if anyone is gonna better this. Whats there to be worried about...if I'm saving money...I'm happy.

Personally, I refuse to get too excited about all of this, because I have a very bad feeling that telkom are going to change things for the worst again. Call me paranoid, but I think that cautious optimism is far better than blind acceptance.. the disappointment is less when telkom opens its mouth again.

I just went to the site and it clearly says 30gig R499, what is the deal

mine says 30gig for R299. cache most likely. others on this forum couldnt see the updated AXXESS banners. had to force a refresh. try Ctrl+F5

Right at the top of their front page I see R299 for 30GB.

I think Pedantic is from SAOL, so I presume he would know what the charges are :)

Relate this quote to what Pedantic had to say at the top of the page.
What concerns me is the future - Telkom are working on a new billing structure which could end all our fun - download as much as you can before that happens !!

If TELKOM wants to be dumb let them.
I am seriously considering opening up something new....... Would actually like to find out how much it would cost to hire space on a sat. I Could contact swisscom and ask them if they would offer me a connection medium via sat and see what happens.
Get them to send me a send/receive sat card with the correct equipment.

.......maybe wishful thinking :(

TELKOM is shooting themselves in the foot. how arrogent can they get before they realise that someone is going to act and do something ABOUT it.
Do they not realise that everyone and i mean everyone will move over to the SNO and that they will die out if they don't become viable.
YES they are trying to hold off the SNO but they only have so much power. the SNO is coming and there is nothing they can do about it.

Yes Vquest, I am from saol.com.

I can confirm that the prices are correct.
The press release on ITWeb was submitted yesterday before all the excitement - the pricing has now been revised.

Government owns 40% of telkom.. I highly doubt they'll let their cash cow die. I think we'll have a type of managed competition. We have 3 cell phone companies, and their prices are almost exactly the same (and are still way above international norms).

yes i agree with you about the government owning. BUT and i mean a big but, the government is so big that they are in competion with themselves.
EG. Eskom is attempting to launch electricity modems and become an ISP.
----yes yes this is a LONG way off but they would effectivly kick telkom. now how much logic does that make? :o

ESKOM <Govenment>telkom

ESKOM against TELKOM ???????
Not much sense.

I know i am speaking hummmm.. typing in context but
its like the head doesn't know what the arm is doing and the arm doesn't know its attached to the body... I mean really

Yeah, and isn't Sentech state owned as well? They're competing directly against Telkom too.

Don't forget, the one thing this government knows how to do is make money by any means possible. If eskom do set up a poweline infrastructure to "compete" with telkom, the government will still be milking the profits at the end of the day, as they "own" both companies. They'll ensure that prices don't drop too low.

EDIT: As for sentech, I'd hardly call their pathetic little offerings competitive.

- 4 Gig Unshaped - R499.00 / Month Incl.

Sais so on their site, i contacted them and it definitly is including VAT. Whats even better is that these accounts are the non-terminating type.
Why would anybody go for 10GB and 20GB now? 30GB costs only R20 or R40 more...

exactly!!!!!

I think we should teach the arm to smack the head until the head hurts so bad it tells the body to cut off the arm and then we can all shout out and run around naked..!!!...
