One of these days all african countries except proudly SA will have cheap bandwidth.

At least for us the consumers there are options: Buy a cable that runs to Angola/Mozambique or Namibia. They at least will have a few gigabits to spare.Then we can own 100% of that pathetic piece of cable :D

Nice to see what the 'African Community' thinks of your attitudes, Ivy and Lyndall. So much for your 'conscience' in not allowing South African companies to take advantage of our poor, backward African neighbours. It seems our African neighbours want none of your big-sister interference, and appear to be doing for their OWN countries what you are seemingly unable or unwilling to do for YOURS. YOU would rather prefer to do it FOR YOURSELVES. There is no patriotism in the Department of Communications and you should all be sunk along with the first cable that ever happens to get laid into the sea IN SPITE OF YOU!!

So its seems that are African counterparts are not as concerned with the Ivy/Nepad structure of wanting to fill up coffers with Chinese/Telscum/DoC maths.

I'm happy that some parts of Africa are at least taking the right steps - soon it will be like the PartyPoker.net ads where the tribesman is playing poker online from his nomadic village - while us here will still be looking for gardeners to rid of Poison Ivy!

At this rate that no cables are coming into SA, a few operators must just get a cable to land in Namibia and then get a big a$$ wireless link over the border from some farmhouse. No-one will even know. Plus you can get 300Mbps+ through wireless while not dropping ANY packets.

If the option is there, DO IT. I don't get it. The government don't have to pay a cent to get it here and if they just accept cables to land here,it will create more jobs, higher quality of living and will be generally good for the economy.

It is hard to skim millions off the top of a company if you do not control that company. A free market scares the spit out of current gov officials.

Free market = less chance to get kickbacks. :sick:

Because she has to protect Telkom until they've sold it off and collected their blood money.

I'm still hoping she'll be announcing her retirement before the ink dries on the contract.
 
Is this cable actualy connected to the US or europe or is it a way for west coast countries to communicate amongst themselves easily and cheaply avoiding the "trombone" effect or that issue where you have to go via the US or into orbit to talk to a neighbour?..Guess Ill jfgi.
@Pilgrim. I dont think there is such thing as a free market and kickbacks work in most markets...

Can anyone find more info on this? googling the company name or the project name delivers very little.
 
You won't find much information for the project yet, because it is only an idea at present.

The project is currently budgeted at US$300 million and Opeke is out "pounding the pavements" looking for sources of finance

Lets start our own investment fund: 100% owned by South Africans. We lay a cable from Komatipoort to Maputo. I dont think it will require a lot of money. In Maputo we link up with SEACOM & EASSy. But the Komatipoort-Maputo cable is a seperate cable system.

If there is enough interest, we may also decide to lay another cable from Alexander bay (in SA) to Oranjemund (in Namibia), there to link up with any private sector undersea cables. Again, it will be 100% SA owned and a totally seperate cable. Any backers??
 
Dude if you can get a few backers, i'll speak to my company and get them to join in. Also, I can put in a world at Internet Solutions as we have some.... "bonds" with them
 
IMO these cable operators are a bit short sighted. The easiest way to access SA is to just totally ignore the idiots in the telcoms depart and the cable in Namibia or Moz. Then local bee's can just build a short link to those countries.
