New shock for drunk drivers

Me and the mates use Good Fellas :erm:

Just wish we had better public transport.

Goodfellas dropped us three weeks ago, bunch of tossers. For the cost of using goodfellas you might as well book a hotel room.

I don't think this idea they have will stand up in court, you need solid evidence and not hearsay/opinion to convict someone.

That second part is what has everyone worries I believe. How the hell can you trust metro cops to enforce this properly?
More importantly the Metro police have repeatedly proven themselves to be under-trained and wildly incompetent.

I've also come across Metro police who will gladly break the law to make themselves a few extra bucks by threatening innocent members of public.

Anything that is based on the hearsay and conjecture of any person (be it Metro, SAPS or a normal person) is not enough to convict someone.

Besides, who'll want to give a lift to a couple of drunk guys who'll barf all over the inside of your car?

Hmmmm..... Army transport truck :D Can be just hosed down :D

nanny state the DA is turning the Western Cape into

+1

It is actually easy not to drink/drive and not to speed. This way, you minimise the risk of being on the wrong side of the law.

Not if you're pulled over at a road block, displaying symptoms that others have described here (which lead the cops to believe you're drunk, when in fact, you're not).

At 2am, my eyes are bloodshot whether I'm pissed or sober; I've been wearing contacts for 20 hours at that point! Good luck to the ofrificer trying to convince a judge (in his best broken English) that I was pissed, and not just tired, especially without video evidence. I guess this will result in more convictions of poor people who can't afford decent attorneys.

1. Lack of sluts
2. Lack of taxis
3. Lack of services available on an ad-hoc basis, and lack of service to The Souf.
4. Too many pick-ups and drop-offs. No-one I know would volunteer.
5. Speak for yourself. I'm 32 and don't see drinking becoming any less entertaining any time soon.

5. At 32 you're still a kid.

But you and many others miss the point. The point is that the government wants to introduce more draconian measures to arrest and harass people they should be working for, when a good system already exists. Blood alcohol level testing can be done, but it's not always done because of poor infrastructure and resources. They should fix that ahead of violating peoples' rights. Just shows where their priorities lie.

Cops need to be educated. Breathalyzer test needs to be used, or blood alcohol level. But if someone suffers from ataxia or has conjunctivitis / is sleep deprived, they should not be harassed.

There are exceptions of cause. The bigger problem is people who drink and drive.

Nobody here is denying that drinking and driving is a problem. But convicting someone without ANY evidence is just a dodgy slope to be going on...

Breathalyze the person, if they blow over, get blood tests. If the lab is up to scratch, they will get 100% conviction levels for all people who are actually over the limit.

The lab is so not up to scratch its scary.
6 month or more waiting for results, tests getting lost or contaminated... They need to get that drager breathalyzer legal again.

Define evidence. If you are driving in/from the nightclub areas in the early hours and exhibit all the symptoms of being drunk then 99% of the time you are dealing with a retard drunk driver.

For the exceptions the popo can use their discretion, just as they have always done. It's not like this will be the first time that they have ever been out on the roads. They are pretty experienced in dealing with drunk drivers. My view is that if you are caught then you get everything coming to you, and the more that get caught the better. If this doesn't hold up in court then that's not a complete loss, at least you've made that scumbag go through hell. And that's ok with me.

Evidence being a blood test showing you are over the limit...

Anything else is not adequate proof, unless they can sort out the issues with the Draeger.

We can talk after you've spent a night in jail after being arrested for driving under the influence when you've not had a drop to drink.

I have had a cop pester me about "drinking and driving" when I had had 2 glasses of wine, and he didn't know his own laws... It was touch and go to me spending a night in jail because a cop was completely incompetent.

32 is not a kid by any measure. 100 years ago I'd be considered an old man, like I presume you are now. The fact that you can now live past 40 doesn't make me a kid, any more than being 94 makes your opinion any more accurate than mine.

Any most of us get the point.

Oh no, you've stepped into his trap. Now Mr Perfect is going to come over here and preach to us sinners about how he's never done anything wrong in his entire life, how "guilty until proven innocent" is better than our current "innocent until proven guilty", and how most pigs aren't incompetent retards who couldn't get work anywhere else due to their mental deficiencies.

Expand the MyCiti Bus service routes and hours already.
Don't need that fancy ass lane.
Just get me down to Muizenburg and I'll be good.

And today Carlisle declared that he doesn't care if the local government's actions are illegal they're going to go ahead anyway. He should be fired. Frankly if the DA doesn't throw him out immediately it demonstrates what they'd do to this country if they were in power and that they're hypocrites pointing fingers at the ANC. I'd actually prefer my predictions about the DA be proven wrong.

That's not evidence of anything.

Yes, never mind all the innocent people who get hurt in the process. Your naive faith in the Metro police is touching.

And if you think getting wrongfully arrested, denied your freedom and property, without proper evidence is all good fun let me know and I'll arrange for you to spend a weekend in a holding cell. Don't worry if you never do anything wrong, I guarantee I'll be able to see you're guilty of something.

I drive drunk and I drive better drunk than 90% of people do sober. My fiancée doesn't drink, I have a designated driver, but she still makes me drive. I'm used to it living in South Africa for so long. The issue at hand is easily bypassed with R100 you should all keep in the ashtray. So stop being a bunch if legal eagles and get on with it.

I hope you don't kill anyone else when your idiocy catches up with you.
