The new Smart #5 SUV is set to be sold with a plug-in hybrid drivetrain alongside previously revealed pure-electric variants in response to growing concerns around sales in some global markets.
The move, confirmed by Chinese-based Smart officials after photos of test mules were posted on social media, represents a major step-change for the Geely- and Mercedes-Benz-owned company, which previously committed to exclusively selling new-generation Smart models with electric power.
Commenting on the move, Smart’s European operations spokesperson told Autocar: “We see individual mobility powered by combustion engines and, in particular, with hybrid drives as a transitional technology towards purely electric driving. It is important to respond to the increasingly diverse demands and desires of the customers. Smart cannot exclude any technological solution for the future at the current point of time”.

Smart 1 gets power boost and fresher looks
Smart, the electric car company backed by Mercedes-Benz and Geely, is giving its Smart #1 a big upgrade. The updates were revealed in filings with China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), and they include more powerful motors and some design tweaks.
The standard Smart #1 will see a huge boost in power thanks to a new rear-mounted electric motor. This new motor will produce 250 kilowatts (335 horsepower). This is a 50 kilowatt (67 horsepower) increase over the current model. The same motor is also used in other vehicles from the Geely group, like the Zeekr 009 and Lynk & Co 02.
Good news for speed demons among us - the Smart #1 Brabus version is also getting an upgrade. With a front-mounted motor added, the combined output will reach 365 kilowatts (489 horsepower) - also a 50 kilowatt (67 horsepower) increase. The Brabus version was always a hoot, but the ridiculous power was too much for its brakes and suspension. There is no mention of any upgrades in those departments, possibly making the more powerful #1 even more "fun" to drive.

Formerly LittleCar brand debuts its BigCar, is third all-new Smart EV
Smart used to make small, funky little cars that were so compact, you could fold it up into your pocket and take it with you. This, not so much. It’s the third all-new Smart EV in as many years, and you know it as the hashtag 5. Sorry, #5.
With its European debut comes new info about its range, speed and charging ability. Built around an 800V platform, UK customers can get a 100kWh battery able to power this not-very-small car up to 366 miles. Find a 400kW hose, and you’ll be able to top back up from 10-80 per cent in 18 mins.
Find a long enough stretch, and you’ll be able to accelerate from 0-62mph in 4.9s. There’s an entry-level car too called the Pro that comes with a slightly smaller LFP battery – 76kWh. No word on this one’s range.
But everything else gets the big boy battery. There’s the dual-motor Pulse, Summit and Premium spec cars, each offering various trim options, while the latter two are capable of that aforementioned 0-62mph time.
And it’s a big boy car, clocking in at around the same size as a Honda CR-V. Inside, Smart says there are 34 storage compartments, a 72-litre frunk, and a boot capable of swallowing 1,530-litres. Which is about the same as an original Smart car.
Naturally there are many screens inside like a 25.6in augmented reality head-up display, a 10.25in instrument cluster, and a pair of 13in OLED centre and passenger screens. There’s AI voice control guided by your friend Leo, a Sennheiser stereo, and lots of driver and safety assistance.
Looks… serious. And quite large. This not-very-small-anymore brand will launch the hashtag 5 later this year in the UK, with prices yet to be confirmed. Sorry, #5.

German tuner Brabus has got it hands on the new Smart #5 SUV, pumping it with 637bhp and giving it the acceleration to match a Range Rover Sport SV.
The flagship variant of the largest car Smart has ever produced is described as the “pinnacle” of the Geely-owned brand.
It stands out from the standard #5 with a small front diffuser, 21in alloy wheels, a matt paintjob, red accents, red brake callipers and an assortment of Brabus branding.
Inside, it features an Alcantara steering wheel, heated front and rear seats and a dashboard dominated by dual 13in OLED screens.
The car also gets a Brabus mode that remaps the throttle to increase power delivery and introduces artificial engines noise into the cabin - like in the #1 Brabus and #3 Brabus.
Like those sibling cars, the #5 Brabus also gets a Launch Mode, which here primes the SUV for 3.8sec 0-62mph sprint.

We have friends that had the older and then newer model Smart. Wife LOVED them. Husband despised them. Parts were an ISSUE. When a runaway truck wiped out the second one he threatened to divorce her if she replace it with another Smart. They're still married.

Yes, the range-topping Smart #5 Brabus combines an all-wheel-drive system with a fully electric powertrain capable of delivering 475kW (or 637bhp in old money), and a 0-62mph time of just 3.8 seconds with the help of Launch Control. Speed tops out at a sufficient 130mph.
The 800V electrical architecture using the 100kWh battery of the #5 Premium delivers about 336 miles of official range, and a rapid charge (up to 400kW) to rejuice the battery to 80 per cent in a swift-ish 18 minutes.
To complete the performance package, there are new bumpers and side skirts, 21in Brabus wheels coupled with red brake calipers, and various badges to denote you've got the Really Fast One. And just like the Smart #3 Brabus, the tuner has integrated simulated engine sounds for your aural pleasure.
