New Speeding fines?

have no problem with speed limits, but they must be within reason and as mentioned before

Yea, the worst [and where i got my biggest fines to date] are these places in the middle of the karoo on the N1 . You are going 120-130 and suddenly, while still on the highway it becomes a 60-80 zone ..bam and you get a massive fine. There isn't even robots or anything, just a little petrol station or something...

The article appears in The Saturday Independent Newspaper (www.tios.co.za) published 2nd December 2006. The journalist is Fiona Gounden. Unfortunately only subscribers to the newspaper's delivery service get to view the article.

Howzabout keeping the fines where they are and actually apprehending the people running the lights?

Please someone explain to me just WTF it is that some people just can't grasp here? Increase the fine and keep on not apprehending the guilty people, that will solve the problem? Am I the only person who finds it completely incomprehensible that some people have this point of view?

Ye, only one fixed camera on that road for quite a few months now. It was on the side going to Muizenberg, which they then turned to the opposite side for going to Cape Town and after people wised up to that too, they put another one up so now it is covering both directions. Under Ladies Mile I think.
Haven't seen any others and I drive it about 2-3 times a week.

I heard about the measuring at 2 different sections of a road but that it was happening in DBN, not CT.

If it is true specifically for the M3 then I could be expecting some fines.

Couldn't agree with you more, I was listening to 702 news last night and they reported that 215 people had been killed on SA roads since 01/12, that's more than one person per hour.

Clearly, concentrating on speeding isn't reducing the rate at which people die on SA roads. Enforcement is the key, not a few examples ... the people breaking the law have to know they will be caught.
 
Today my dad was at a stop street and he had a taxi behind him and behind the taxi was a fancy BMW cop car.

Just after pulling the taxi blatantly and aggressively passed my dad on a solid line when there could have been oncoming traffic. The cop then passed my him soon after on a broken line and my dad gestured to him about the taxi which he no doubt saw. So he followed the cop to see if he was going to pull the taxi over but he instead turned into the police station.

My dad pulled in as well and confronted him on why he did nothing. He just gave a blank stare as if to say "what are you talking about". My dad lost his temper and told the idiot "no wonder the roads are so dangerous" and drove off. He should of asked to see the station commander but he might have given the cop a good klap in the meantime and then he would be in a bit of cr@p.

Yes, they did. Cause they do nothing about the truck doing 20km/h you were stuck behind for 30 minutes on a 100km/h road. :D

Last week I did 1000km in Gauteng. This week I did 2400km in Limpopo province (started Tuesday). I know the **** that is going on the roads and its not the speeders that are the problem its the slowers (mainly trucks and skorokoro taxis and bakkies) and the state of the roads. Look at the pothole-fest around Burgersfort.

At least they fixed up that deathtrap Moloto road and its really nice now, except for the pedetrains on the side at night that keeps you worrying if you will be driving over someone in the next minute the whole time.

And about speedhumps: the ones they have at Jane Furse and Nebo are effective for their purpose, you have to slow down to 5km/h an hour to go over them. Problem is, the ****ing useless municipalities trying to protect the dumbass township dwellers from being runover by fast moving cars dont put up speedbump signs and they are not easy to see even when moving at a "slow" 80km/h. Someone is gonna die because of them...

Haven't you noticed the large yellow streak down the spines of the MPD? It's especially visible when there's a taxi in evidence.
 
Question. Who officially determine the amounts for fines?

I have major issues with the way speeding fines are issued. I have received several fines in the past few months in Ontdekkers for speeding and I do not generally exceed speed limits. I remember one evening driving down Ontdekkers all the cars slowed down and even at 20km/h the camera took pictures of our cars in a 70 zone. I feel unmanned hidden cameras give no contribution to road safety but is just a clever way for Traffic departments to auto-generate additional money, it is of no use for road safety.

Some cameras are set to snap every car passing. They also check for occupants not wearing a seatbelt from time to time.

According to the AA, over 18 000 people died on SA roads in 2005. That is 49 per day....which is way higher than the current numbers for the holiday period. That is 2 per hour every day of the year on average...

Thanks, JontyB I didn't know that.

I have learned in my life never to trust anything or anyone. How on earth am I supposed to trust that a fine I got for a violation months ago are for real? Then I also do not have a clue where I got it... I can rant on and on. I still cannot see anything legal or fair about cameras. :cool:

Another point to consider is that the police can not impose a fine on an individual, this falls under the jurisdiction of the courts. The police may "suggest" a fine and an individual may accept this and then pay. Should the "suggested" fine however be unacceptable to the individual he then approaches the court and goes through that process in which instance the court then decides on the fine required based on the merit of the case concerned.

The e-mail has started doing the rounds again and while searching for a reference I came across the posts.
Unfortunately in my rush I didn't check the date of the thread.
