you guys seriously don't have a clue what you are talking about. Yes it is expensive, but so was a Sega Megadrive when it came it, and DVD players were also overpriced when it started, to replace VHS.

I have a 42" LCD and Bluray quality is far superior to Normal DVD's.

Also, did you guys forget you can put 50GB's on a single disc?

It's expensive, yes, but I remember paying R1200 for a 24X CD Writer a few years ago....it will get cheaper, you all know that.

As usual you're not comparing all the advantages vs disadvantages.

BluRay - only advantage is higher resolution and colour gamut BUT
you need to spend on a full HD set in decent size and buy the actual
player - both are more expensive than what is currently available.
In addition people with older HDTV's without HDMI (and HDCP)
cannot benefit.

DVD - you can buy a player for R300. Individual disks are cheaper
and variety is greater. Quality improvement is visible with any TV
even sets from the 80's. Yes you don't get full HD but to really enjoy
HD on a 42 inch full HD set you must be sitting quite close,
if you're sitting too far away you can't tell its HD and if you
can you are just fooling yourself to justify being an early
adopter and paying a premium for something with only
a marginal benefit. :)

Ok, now move away from the screen and before long you'll see you
can't tell the difference. It looks better if you have a 46 inch plus
full HD screen on your wall, or even bigger - depending on room size.
Of course if you're staring at the picture from up close, sure
there is a difference but who watches their TV through a pair
of binoculars?

Let's see DVD version of Pirates of the Caribbean: R149
DVD player (Region free): already own
TV: already own

BD verison of POTC: R299
BD Player- (Region locked) Sony PS3: R3500
Full HD 46 inch set: R25000+

Total: 28799 vs R149

And you only need to sit a little further away and all that money makes
no sense anymore. Plus add the frustration of not being able to skip
ads, being REGION LOCKED (AGAIN!) and finally waiting longer
for the BD player to kick in vs the DVD player which is instantaneous.

But what advantage does it have over solid state drives or, particularly, direct download?

BR is nothing more than a heavily DRM encumbered waste of money. The delay in getting it to market and the massive price tag for early adopters mean that it will be replaced by newer, better tech before it has a chance to gain any traction.

The Bugatti veyron - Supercar or Epic Fail?

Yes, it has loads of cons too, it's expensive to a Toyota-MR2 like blu-ray is to a DVD. that doen't make it an epic fail just because a lot of people cant afford it!

I don't care If you have a mickeymouse TV that has no HDMI inputs... most TV's will HAVE to have newer input for Television, Consoles, and Movie Players.

Really bad comparison. BR is a mass-market consumer product. The Bugatti is a limited edition expression of hubris by VW.

Really? All it really is, is a car for the guys who are serious about supercars.

same with Blu-Ray... If you wanna watch movies at home, a HDTV and a Blu-Ray Movie with Dolby Surround sound is as close as you can get to the cinema experience. otherwise, settle for a cheepo R200 DVD player and watch movies on your grandma's 32cm Telefunkin, and be like the guy driving a Toyota MR2 who thinks he is driving a supercar.

If you weigh the facts and see how low the interest in this technology is, you'll see why I said it's an epic fail story waiting to happen ;)
 
LOL...step into makro and see how many people are buying Huge displays these days....just do it, you will see...

all the shops aren't selling these things for the joke, people actually buy HD Screens.

guess what, we will ALL be using blu-ray in a few years time... just wait and see.

I will make you a prediction... again.

Blu-ray will have nowhere NEAR the uptake that DVD had... and it will peak IN THE NEXT YEAR (or end of 2009), then decline. By then the next generation device will already be taking over. Never mind 50 Gb. By then we will be on 500 Gb discs. ;)

don't worry... I will be able to find this thread again by then.

Ah, but was 5GB DVD's used for Music? No - CD's are still being used, because it is good Enough, and everyone has CD players by now...

Just because 500 GB DVD's will be out for Storage, that doesn't mean blu-ray will die.

If you say people won't buy blu-ray when the next upgrade comes, why would they pay 2000$'s for a 500GB DVD Player ? By then blu-ray will have hundreds of titles!

You're missing a key point: physical media is a dead end and will be replaced very soon.

Keeper - how many Blu-Ray discs have you used for backup lately ..... oh, what's that, none ...why is that. Price maybe. All the guys are saying is that not everyone bought into Blu-Ray and are at this moment working on bigger, better formats ..... end.
