I will make you a prediction... again.

Blu-ray will have nowhere NEAR the uptake that DVD had... and it will peak IN THE NEXT YEAR (or end of 2009), then decline. By then the next generation device will already be taking over. Never mind 50 Gb. By then we will be on 500 Gb discs.

Please give us the links and the information you babble so much about. You keep on harping on that same story since the huge argument before the HD DVD failed due to ALL major players dumping it. Why? ... they saw which is the best technological way to go. Everyone argued about the necessity of a 50 Gig DVD disk., and Now? Where are we. All new releases of movies comes out on Blue ray and soon DVD's will be to small for all the additional features and content.

As for the so called new technologies that will replace the current technologies ... of course it will happen. But you will have to have the backup and investment of major players and if they realise the new technology will aid piracy, like the HD DVD would have, then forget it. Why do you not invent the so called new technologies? I am sure with such a huge argument you will get all the backup and investment you need. I mean only Microsoft with their HD DVD support failed, Wonder why, they are so damn rich., and Warner and Toshiba all together they still could not stem the tide. So yeah You may wait for your new technology someone will one day dream up and replace everything with. I will also be the first to buy it then. BUT for now I buy what is available and is working at a HUGE improvement than what was ever before .... while you wait and murmur and cry and argue and wonder what could have been. Soon you are old then you are still stuck on the same ba.dwagon while millions if not billions enjoyed the technology that was available.

Mostly the kideos arguing about this technology must have huge thumbs with all the sucking going on. I bet you never even really investigated the HD technology or just cannot afford it. Therefore the antagonism.

As for the impending BluRay and HD technology impending failures. Please highlight those posts where you guys claimed the HD DVD format will win and the Blu Ray format will fail and what was the outcome? Why? as it was stated by those that knew that it will be because of disk size and Sony backup. Shame, I know it is hard to bet on and saddle the wrong horse. The same guys still use the same arguments and yet they only changed their tune. They now holler instead of just singing.

The only guy that was talking any factual sense here was keeper as he has the facts and results to back him. Most of the rest just live in a huge dreamworld while sucking thumbs. Why ...simple ... DRM, it makes complicates their lives and make it difficult for them to be pirates.

I was at HiFi corp today. I was shocked to see the HD TV's flying. Mostly black customers (gents) using cash and not the small ones. The R12000.00+ screens somewhat older versions or demo models on sale. They do not even have a clue what they are buying as long as it says HD ready or Full HD. Even they know where the technology is heading, HD technology is huge overseas. We are just starting.

SOMETIMES I wonder what screens some of these guys so against this HD technology are using. Maybe still on low resolution 15"" ..?... or are you guys on the higher resolution LCD's. If not so then I understand fully (wonder what graphic cards you use) LOL. If you are on the higher resolution high speed graphics and on a higher resolution LCD screen then you better go see a shrink as then I do not know why you argue against you better knowledge. What a joke.

You're missing a key point: physical media is a dead end and will be replaced very soon.

Tell us what it is and give us links to this future technology. You speak of Internet streaming and downloading? That will cost too? When the whole world is thinking of curbing bandwidth usage by capping? Maybe ten or twenty years down the line, maybe when bandwidth really becomes cheaper but I doubt and then you still have to pay for the content. In the meantime while you wait I will enjoy the current technology as they do all over the first world. Just a whisper, why is it that in the east this technologies is widely adopted and used? Why do they broadcast in HD and why are they developing and buying the HD TV's even up to 100+ inches of screens. What does that have to do with BluRay? BluRAy is just a current available media disk that can store 50Gig of data for media distribution. It not about BluRay you have a Gripe. Its the protection DRM. Do you really think that the major players are going to in future allow free downloads of all the media you can lay your hands on. NEVER. DRM is here to stay to prevent theft of copyright materials does not matter what technology you use for storage and delivery. So why the huge gripe against BluRAy? Oh I know..Because the "Xbox does not have it. Shame.

We are talking nicely about hardware here... having a little debate and chat... you don't have to turn it into a slanging match.

If you can't take the heat maybe you should turn your computer off and go have a beer in front of that big screen TV. Nothing is worth getting this upset over. So I may be wrong... or you may be wrong. If that is the case I will eat my words, but you don't have to blow a fuse over it.

Then same can be said for the other side. Go watch the olympics on your 74cm screen. Maybe you can record and save some of the media on your DVD's (or was that stiffy's you are using?)

FACTs:

We're facing a global economic slowdown. If the Americans are complaining
about the price of petrol and the fact that cost of living is rising, something
which was not as prevalent in the 1990's or even 2 years ago, I think
we can assume that any reports of less interest in an overpriced first generation heavily DRM'ed product can be believed. People are genuinely
in trouble, everywhere, in poor countries people don't have enough to eat,
in SA, people are having to sell off their assets/cars and cut back
heavily on spending. When faced with a choice of a TV for R20.000
and the cost of putting a young child through primary school (uniform, books,
stationery, fees, lunch and transport costs) I think I would choose
to do my duty as a parent first over some extra pixels I may see.
If I am so filthy rich then the point becomes moot I guess, however
most people are not so filthy rich and even a full HD plasma purchased
2 years ago for R500.000 would not be able to play BD back because
in those days HDMI and HDCP where not implemented in these big sets.

BD is supposed to replace DVD, but to do that, the prices of BD players
have to drop to the level consummers can afford to pay (sub R500), ie can your
gardener afford a BD player? If NOT, its not a consumer product
but an audio/videophile first adopter speciality item which cannot
be considered a replacement for DVD for a good few years.

What does this have to do with the topic, some can afford it some obviously cant. Why hammer those that can afford it and want to discuss the technology? You also had much to say about the uptake up of HDTV from DSTV. Does it gripe you so much that some people adopts technology? The same go for cars, do you hammer everyone that buys a new car as that money could have been spend better on something else? I am only asking no argument here.

Regards to the costs. I remember paying lots of money for the first advancement to CD and then to DVD. Reason was that I needed larger backup storage. The same for the printers, look at the costs now, the ink costs more than the printer, Look at LCD screens and where that is going cost wise. Why the big gripe against BluRay and all the so called arguments that is flogged around? It is just pitiful by guys that cannot stomach what has happened to the new storage media and the gripe about DRM (As you mentioned) and Sony. Just because Sony wants to protect their copyrights. So foolish. Or they feel aggrieved because they cannot afford it.

I don't see what it will be replaced with. Telepathy? More likely than bandwidth becoming cheaper than optical media any time soon AFAIK.

Booooy howdy I tellya have you seen what them crazy scientists have come up with to play music on? They call them there contraptions a "LASER DISC PLAYER" and it shoots freakin laserbeams at plastics to play the music. Why do I need that when I can't even hear the difference? They say it sounds better but you have to listen closely to notice! That's not worth $9000! It will never catch on I tells ya!

My local music store has over 9000 tape and vinyl selections to choose from, but all they have in these laserdiscs at my store is 52nd Street by Billy Joel - AND I DON'T EVEN LIKE HIS CRAP. They say they're going to take at least a whole year just to get 100 other titles out. pfffft. only rich folk will waste their hard earned cash on this nonsense - it will never catch on!

Wasn't the Laser Disc a failure of massive proportions?

Thing is it was never made for most people. for its target market it has done pretty well. whereas BR is made for most people.

i think no matter our feelings on BR (and HD DVD), we have to agree that the picture quality is superior. what we can disagree on is whether the cost of gaining that superior quality is worth it.
