New tech podcast launched

Pretty sad that I had to stop listening to ZAtech and will not be able to listen to this due to excessive bandwidth costs. At 25c a meg, there is no way I can afford it. Go go rural banana-net operators holding us hostage out here far far from the land of milk, honies and cheap fraudband.

Yes have not added it to itunes just yet. Found out that which ever logo you use the first time will be the final time. As were currently working on it though might be a good idea to wait just a little bit. We could go with the one I through together for the RSS feed http://www.letstalkgeek.net/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/podcast400x400.png. Though thought that making those decisions at 2 in the morning would not be a good idea :).

Boerewors is there some other way we can redistribute the podcast to you? We have put it up inside the wireless user groups. Though I know that only helps if your on them :)
 
Interesting that the bandwidth robber baron holding me hostage is doing it through the same wireless tech that WUGs use. I would LOVE to get your podcasts on a DVD/CD when you have a few episodes going, I will even pay for the postage since the postage will be about 10% of the cost of actually downloading them.

Yeah, feel free to ask us some questions - don't be scared, we are geeks after all so will give you a proper answer. Specifically if there is something you don't understand :) Hopefully we can do a good job of explaining some tricky stuff or giving a more technical insight to how things work and why geeky stuff is cool!
 
Finally a local podcast without hearing about Apple products and apps the whole time. Great to see the WUG guys doing this, all the best for the future guys, I'll be tuning in on a regular basis.
 
YEAH! I'm going to try and push back the other guys when they get carried away with their Macbook and iPhone stuff/apps. Android still ok, but needs to be controlled :) And if we discussion reduced interconnection rates, please feel free to stop listening ;-)

Please expand on the WUG comment? I am considering the option and if there are negative aspects, would like to knoe.
 
I don't think he was referring to the WUG itself. Think he was talking about an internet provider that provides its services over wireless. The I know that the WUG's can't provide internet due to regulation constraints if I understand it correctly.
 
Considering that the WUGs do not charge an amount per data unit transferred, you can expect that most people transfer as much as they physically can (for some reason) so your mileage may vary. Comparing WUG to Internet doesn't really make sense.. apples and oranges. What are your concerns? Post them as questions and we will cover them in the next podcast

Exactly what the follow up post said, WUGs use wireless technology to share information, 5.0 Ghz antenna, routers etc. The guy who is providing me with internet access is basically bringing the feed from an ADSL line from a town 22km away to me by using the same wireless technology and charging 25c a meg for the privilege.

There is no problem with the technology, in fact , it keeps working in bad weather and good weather and is amazingly resilient to those factors and kudos to the guy for using it as a way to make money (and provide me with Internet, I would have only night time dialup otherwise) . I am just saying that it is ironic that the same tech is used by the WUG for free is being used to rip me off.

All this talk about providing connectivity to the rural areas by the government is pure rubbish, Telkom will not put ADSL in here, Vodacom refuses to upgrade their tower here to 3G, so we are still in the dark.
