New The PC Build Thread

I am planning to upgrade my PC by building a new system. My current setup is a Skylake i5-6500 with 16GB RAM and an RX 580 8GB GPU.

I would appreciate your thoughts on the following Wootware PC Builder configuration. The system will primarily be used for gaming and will also serve as a Plex media server (media stored on external drives).

Typical gaming usage will include:
  • ARPGs: Titan Quest, Grim Dawn
  • RPGs: Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Gothic, The Witcher
  • RTS: Age of Empires, Warcraft, Starcraft
  • FPS: Doom, Quake, Wolfenstein

My long-term plan is to upgrade the CPU after the Zen 6 refresh (projected for mid-2028) and potentially increase RAM to 48–64GB at that time.

You don't need a 4 dimm motherboard. 2 dimm motherboard with wifi and 2 m.2 slots will be just fine. The issue is AMD memory controllers don't like all 4 slots occupied, you will actually get less performance. You are better off getting a mid range board and push that money into more ram or better CPU( In this case I switched it up for a better CPU.)

Go for a 3 fan cooler, go for a case with a front intake fans. Cheaper motherboard and you can get a 7800X3d.

Also added a 2tb drive, nothing wrong with the WD green M.2 drive

Tweaked it a bit

Thanks for the feedback.

I saw the Maxsun boards but didn't know if they were good or not.
I picked that case because it didn't have intake fans, don't want all that lighting in the front of the tower, which is why I also chose that water cooler.
The M.2 drive is for Windows and maybe Office, already have a 2TB SSD 2.5" drive in my current machine, that I will use for games, will take that 1TB WD green instead.

For the games listed don't need a 7800x3d at all. The 9600 or 9700x will be fine.

Yeah the thing is, we have zero idea, what is going to happen pricing wise in the next few months, might not even be viable to upgrade to the latest zen 6, with a 7800x3D, takes away any need to upgrade to zen 6. This PC should be good for at least first gen AM6.

Previously it would be okay to go with mid chip and just upgrade with the next gen as needed. But considering how royally fcked we are pricing wise, it isn't worth the risk. Considering estimation is at least 3-4 years of elevated pricing.

Get what you can NOW, and ride out the storm.

The 9700x isn't a mid chip :-) its a good all arounder, while the 7800x3d is a good gaming chip :-)

If you going water cooling you ideally need intake fans in the front, as you now have ZERO airflow over the VRM's and ram. If the color bothers you get some none RGB fans.

But you really need the intake fans from the front, when water cooling , 240mm is barely enough....

You can also go for a case that can mount the rad to the front. either way Highly recommend front intake fans as a must.

Good point, let me look at cases that aren't too flashy.

Either one, my pick would be the 7800 :)
Not sure the R1700 price difference would be worth it. 25% price difference for maybe 10% difference in games. Yes some games can be 38% but those are few and far between.

Well up to him to decide. I am more impartial to the larger L3 cache. It was one of the reason I didn't go with the Ryzen 7 8700F which was on a huge special at the time.

But yeah 9700x makes sense, if it is just gaming 7800x3d...

He had the mid range 7500x3d originally on his list...

I had l3 cache in my 5700x3d, for the games that use it, it's great. But for those that don't you're still getting a lower clocked cpu. Decided this time to go for a 9700x vs a 9800x3d, though that is a lot faster but it's almost 50% more cost.

Well then I would swap it out for the 9900x then. same price, still no reason to upgrade for the next 4 years. I don't see AM6 to be affordable in this price bracket. If the DDR 5 base pricing(before the shyte storm) is anything to go by DDR6 is going to be a stinker.

I would just honestly push for a high as system as possible given what we know, were are fcked for at least 2 years.

Yeah 9700x is fine :-) especially since I've only got a 9070 gpu.

Are you going on holiday this year ? If you need someone to look after your home, and keep the GPU warm let me know..
Haha nah :p. Will hopefully be used this Dec. Plus hopefully my son will remember he has a 5700x3d with the b580 :)

Either way I am screwed can't afford to upgrade GPU......apparently GPUs are going up 10%+ and corsair products is going up 40% as of today.

It is getting to the point of being unsustainable......supply and demand and all that shizz. It is getting to the point, where manufactures are switching over to more profitable products, I can't wait for the eventual bubble to pop or hit a ceiling it has to eventually and watch the free fall it is going to be apocalyptic, and watch these companies crawl back to consumers.

It is a never ending cycle of consumers getting shafted.

Sadly in SA the fall isn't as big as others.
I mean even our second hand market is terrible

What I find annoying is, everyone else is allowed to sell for whatever price they want, if you dare sell just above market price you get mobbed......

saw an AMD Ryzen 5 3600, system today with 1660super secondhand for 8.5K...WATF.
